Larissa didn’t press me.

“I’m sorry.” I kept my eyes away from hers, wishing Ellasara hadn’t been mentioned at all, that it was just Larisa and me in the tub and no one else. Ellasara had ruined enough moments for me. I didn’t want her to ruin this.

“No, I’m sorry.”

My eyes found hers again.

“I’m sorry that she hurt you.” Sincere empathy burned in her eyes like glowing embers. She’d been made a fool herself, so she carried the same scar, in the same place, right across the heart. “I’m sure she regrets it.”

“She doesn’t.” I was merely a pawn in a very long game of chess.

Larisa moved from her end to mine, crawling up my body until she was snuggled into me, her back to my chest, her hips between my thighs. She grabbed my arm and crossed it over her chest like a warm blanket. “Then one day, she will.”

“Heard you lovebirds last night.” Cobra was dressed in his gold and black armor, his shoulders wide in the padding, his arms covered in the jutting vambraces. His cloak was clasped to his gear, black with a gold sheen.

“Thanks for respecting my privacy.”

“It’s a mountain—it echoes.”

Larisa emerged next, Fang with her.

I hoped she hadn’t heard what my brother said.

“Then I guess you weren’t with anyone,” Larisa said. “Because we didn’t hear anything.”

A smug grin moved across his lips as he adjusted his vambraces. “Oh, I was.”

“Then I guess you didn’t make her come.”

She’sss fire.

I grinned as I looked at my brother.

Instead of being insulted by the dig, Cobra grinned like he appreciated it. “Would you like to test me out, sweetheart?”

“Cobra.” I shot him a glare. “She’s my woman. Get your own.”

Larisa immediately looked at me, her expression indecipherable.

Cobra couldn’t be sheathed, just like a wild snake. “Mother always wanted us to share, didn’t she?”

I ignored him altogether. “Let’s ride out.”

He came close, dropping his voice low so the words stayed between us. “Not my faultyourwoman is flirting with me.”

“She’s putting you in your place. There’s a difference.”

“A woman with a spine has always been my weakness.” He gave a slight grin before he walked off. “You’ve been warned.”

We continued our journey east, taking the path that Cobra knew. There were hills of grass and weeds, but the greenery turned to rocks and boulders, and the temperature dropped as patches of snow became visible on the ground.

I checked on Larisa, seeing her breath escape as vapor, little trembles shake her arms.

“A blizzard hit last week,” Cobra said from beside me. “It gets worse from here.”
