Larisa walked to the right, searching tree trunks and grassy knolls. “You think the pinecones are gold because the serpents rub their scales against them when they slither by?”

“Maybe.”

“Like how a bear scratches his back against a tree. Maybe that’s how they shed their skin.”

I continued forward, checking in with Fang every few minutes to make sure he was alright. I kept an eye on Larisa too, checking on the two beings I cared for simultaneously. Didn’t have enough headspace to care for myself.

I’ve made contact.

What did they say?

Hold on.

“Fang found one.”

“That was fast.”

Together, we walked forward, finding Fang perched up in the grass, directly across from a Golden Serpent that was also positioned upright. They were at the same height, eyes locked on each other, their tongues slipping in and out. The Golden Serpent had iridescent scales that sparkled in the sunshine. It was a major contrast against the lush greenery and the dark earth. Like a diamond in the rough.

Their stare continued for a long time, several minutes.

What’s happening?

Fang was quiet.

Larisa looked at me.

I shook my head.

Minutes later, Fang spoke.I’ve explained the situation, that their venom isss needed as a cure for a great sickness to humankind.

So he agrees?

No. He isn’t concerned for the well-being of humankind.

Well, he either cooperates, or we make him cooperate.

You do not threaten a Golden Ssserpent.Fang turned to regard me.

Then you better convince him, so I don’t have to threaten him.

He stared at me a moment longer before he looked at the Golden Serpent again. I assumed their conversation resumed based on the way they stared at each other.

Larisa looked at me. “What’s happening?”

“Fang is trying to convince him.”

“I’m not sure how he’s going to do that. Why would you willingly offer something to a stranger?”

“I don’t know.”

Silence trickled by. The snakes continued their standoff.

“Can we really leave Aurelias behind?” she asked.

“I don’t like it either.”

“He’s not just in a different kingdom, but on the other side of the world.”
