For one night, I’m giving myself normal.

That is until I get her settled and make my next call. I can’t fucking wait to do that.

I watch her walk back and forth to the kitchen on bare feet as I send a text to set up a meeting.

For the next fifteen minutes, I check my emails and watch the surveillance cameras while Landyn does what she wants to do in the kitchen and talks to June and Miranda.

The table is clear and ready for a new day when I take her hand and lead her upstairs.

She yawns. “How can I be so tired when all we did was laze around all day?”

I lock us in the bedroom and breathe a sigh of relief like I have every time I walk into this room since I ripped out the cameras. I lean down and press my lips to her forehead. “Go to bed. I don’t know how long I’ll be, but I’ll be right through those doors if you need me.”

She proves she’s not only resilient after last night, but she trusts me. “I know. I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll make sure you’ll be more than fine.” I put my hand to the side of her face and tip it to mine. What I really want to add is that I’m willing to make that commitment for the rest of my days, but since she assumes we’re really married, that would not be my best move.

She starts to push up on her bare toes, but I get to her first and take her mouth.

This is new.

A new level of trust and passion and need.

My hand slides down to cup her ass and she presses her body to mine. I have to fight to get my dick under control as it thickens in my jeans with only a mind for her.

I’m not far behind him.

Now that I’ve given into this—this very real relationship that’s playing out inside of a lie—I wonder how I’m going to be able to put her off much longer.

Because I want her more than anything. I’m too close to the end to fuck it up.

But my need for this lie to be real is overwhelming. It’s taking over my motivations and my actions.

I think about what’s waiting for me in the office next door and break our kiss. We’re both breathless, and I’m halfway to hard, which I do not need right now.

I tip my forehead to hers. “I’ll meet you in bed.”

She licks her lips and nods.

I brush my thumb lightly over her cheek. As the swelling goes down, her skin is turning a tint of blue that feeds my rage. It’s about the only thing that will drag me away from her right now.

“I’ll be in soon,” I promise, giving her a nudge toward the bathroom. I wait until she closes herself inside before turning to the double doors.

He jumps to his feet as soon as I open the door. “Boss. I came right away.”

I move to my chair across from him and settle in. He’s nervous, which he fucking should be.

“Sit,” I demand.

He falls to his ass immediately.

There’s a hierarchy in this organization, and Don has worked his way to the top of the middle. He has enough power that what happened under this roof last night falls on his shoulders.

But he’s also far enough down the chain, he should be scared as hell sitting in front of me, because it’s his fucking responsibility that Nic got through.

I don’t have to ask him anything because he starts to beg. “It won’t happen again, boss. Nic talked them into letting him in. They were afraid to stand against him because of who he is.”

I narrow my eyes. “They were afraid of a man they don’t report to?”
