It had been one week since the uneventful surprise at the mansion. One week since I’d seen him. One week…and my heart still skipped a sad beat at the memory.
I suggest you focus on the reason you are in this house, Miss Walker. You’re here because of the contract and nothing more. Know your place.
Of course, it was a stupid idea to throw my elusive boss a surprise party. How had I failed to see that? How had I failed to see that I was nothing but a clown and a fool?
After his words, he had stormed off. Leaving me worse than I already was.
If only I’d listened to my guts and cleared the table once I realized he would never make it. Perhaps my heart would be less heavy. And the air wouldn’t be so damn thick around him.
But I hadn’t listened. And after eventually clearing the table, I’d stupidly left the gifts there.
Why?
I didn’t know. Perhaps I still wanted him to see what he was missing. I still wanted him to realize… that everyone deserved a second chance. That he did too.
Another stupid move.
The gifts remained on the table for two days until it vanished. Of course, he’d gotten annoyed and ordered Brenda to trash it. Or worse, he’d trashed it himself.
When Sarah heard how it had all turned out, she was sad too. It certainly wasn’t how I- we’d expected the day to go. But I was past it.
Mr. Knight was right. I was there because of the contract and nothing more. And I was here-in this law firm- because of my dreams.
No more, no less.
Willing my hippocampus to something else, I dug my fingers into my bag. A satisfied grin sneaked onto my lips when I felt it. And pride filled me when I brought it out.
Ladies and gentlemen, the evidence.
Drawing the laptop nearer, I pressed the power button. And inserted the flash drive.
After a few clicks, the video played.
“Come on, Dickson, don’t be a dick. Hit that record button,” Sean teased. And the others behind the camera laughed.
It was the middle of the night. Sean and his goons were set to wreak havoc on Mae’s apartment again.
W-We s- shouldn’t be doing this.” Dickson stuttered from behind the camera.
Sean turned to glare at him. “Do you have a crush on Mae?”
“N-no. I jus-”
“Then shut the fuck up and record me.”
Indeed Sean was the vandal. He even had the nerve to record himself while at it.
Didn’t he know the video could someday fall into the wrong hands? Or did he truly think he was the boss and everyone in his group of four friends was cool with his act?
Of course, it was typical bully behaviour to think without acting.
I skipped the remaining part until I reached the end of the video. Sean had a smug grin on his face. And I couldn’t wait to wipe it off.
Sinking into my seat, I did a little happy dance.
My plan had worked out.
I’d found Sean’s group of friends. Studied them. Then chose the one I sensed had the least balls.
