“You’re fired.”

Chapter One

Renee

The Night Before…

It was Sunday, the fifteenth. My lucky night.

“Renee, we’re leaving!” I grimaced at the sound of my roommate. I didn’t know why she was yelling since our apartment wasn’t even that big. But she was quite the drama queen.

I’d known her only for two weeks though.

“Just a minute!” I expelled the words before grabbing the powder brush.

Hurriedly, I dabbed the soft ends against my creamy cheeks. Then, I moved to my pointed nose. With a contented sigh, I smacked my small, red lips against each other.

There was something about the colour red that boosted my confidence. And just as I placed the half-red mask over my eyes, I felt complete.

My brown hair matched my warm, honey-brown orbs. I felt pretty; not like I usually felt otherwise.

But tonight was different.

And it was different for two reasons.

One, I received a letter of employment from Blanchard Legal three days ago. Perhaps it was well deserved since I was a recent graduate with pristine academic records.

But considering the multiple shifts and breakdowns I had to go through to survive college and law school, it was a big win for me. Not to mention, the law firm was the most prominent in New York; a full-service law firm.

Two, we had a dinner to attend, my roommate and I. And her casual fling.

I couldn’t recall the last time I did something other than work shifts. So, I was excited to ease some stress. It was also my first law function as a certified lawyer.

And that’s why the burly man -David, I think- waiting for us in the sleek Audi had invited us.

It was Sierra’s way of celebrating me. She knew how much I wanted to attend the function, but only the elites and their dates were privileged.

“Renee, I swear to the sky if you don’t-” I drowned out Sierra’s words. Grabbing my black purse, I sauntered out of the house, brushing past her blue mask and knee-length blue dress. And she locked the door.

Sierra was tall and model-like with olive-tanned skin, blue eyes, and fiery red hair. It wasn’t a wonder she’d convinced the wealthy lawyer to pick us up.

After about half an hour of driving, we finally reached the event centre. You could just tell it was a rich people’s thing. The elegance and exquisiteness screamed it all.

Pride swirled in my heart at the reality that I was here.

As we entered the grand ballroom, the city lights danced like distant stars. I was instantly excited. It was a prestigious law dinner.

But not just anyone. A fundraiser-themed law dinner.

It was a bit different that legal practitioners would indulge in such. A very uncommon experience. But this fundraiser was held every year.

And it seemed like this time, they decided to spice it up.

Alas, I was finally here; after studying my ass off for the bar exam. Right in the middle of elegance and influence.

The room was ablaze with the shimmer of opulent chandeliers. And it cast a soft glow over the sea of distinguished masks. Soft opera music complimented the mood.

With a smile, I drank in the sight before me.
