It was my boss. But this time, he didn’t end like he usually would. The call stayed a little longer before it ended.

Suddenly, my heart rate spiked. And not in a good way.

The last time something had been off over the phone didn’t end well. Technically it did. But still.

With a bit of lag in my movement, I pushed past his doors. I forced myself inside.

A startled gasp escaped my lips when I reached him. Right there on his table were pictures of us, from the conference.

Pictures of us walking in, holding hands. Talking and even smiling.

What was I thinking? I should have known.

He’s famous. Of course, there’d be cameras on him and his date.

But the pictures were the least of my problems when I took in the headline of the magazine.

Billionaire Damien Knight seen at the Annual Legal Conference with his fiancée:

For the first time, the billionaire appears at a law dinner with a woman. She seems to be more than an eye candy as the diamond ring on her finger—

Tears blurred my vision as I brought my eyes away from the stupid paper.

For the second time, I resisted the urge to yell. This wasn’t what I wanted. This wasn’t part of the plan.

With increased breathing, I glanced at him. His jaw was hard, and his fists clenched slightly on the desk.

No. He could still do something about it, right?

“Please tell me you can do something about this.”

“Miss Walker-”

“It’s easy. Just schedule a meeting with them and tell them that I was hired. I won-”

“Renee!” My chest trembled at the intensity of his voice.

I swallowed thickly at the anger in his eyes. Anger? I had every right to be angry too.

“The deal has not been signed.”

I shook my head. Already sensing where this was heading.

“I can’t be seen again with another woman,” he breathed heavily. “It simply counteracts the whole purpose of this in the first place.”

“I don’t-” I struggled to let the words out. “Want to do this.”

“You’ll be paid again. This time a fixed amount until it’s all done...”

“…You also need to be safe. Your picture is out there. The whole of New York knows you. It is unsafe to leave you all by yourself.”

The whole of New York knew who I was because of him. All this had happened because of one stupid offer.

I wanted to argue. To yell at him for bringing me into this mess. But I knew it was no use.

My lips quivered in resignation as I struggled to hold back the tears. He seemed to notice.

“I’m extending the deal. This time with different terms…and conditions.”
