I couldn’t let it get to that. I couldn’t afford to.
Only me and her had known about it. We’d sworn to take it to the grave. And I knew it was all safe but for how long. How long till their curious noses dug and found something?
“We have arrived, sir. I will step out now to escort Miss Walker here.”
He didn’t wait for a response before the door gently closed shut.
I knew I needed to act fast. Proactive. Otherwise, I was going to lose it all.
But for now, I needed my head straight for tonight’s business.
I threw the paper below the passenger seat. And when I raised my head, my gaze caught her through the window.
Her hips swayed with an alluring move as she walked. The red dress I had gifted sat perfectly on her. The glitters caught a ray of moonlight as she looped her arm in Fred’s.
The dress was a- I didn’t know what it was. Fred picked it. But it reached her knees.
It had a transparent side above her chest that revealed her creamy cleavage. And flowed to her wrist.
Her waist was small. Just the perfect circumference for-
It seemed like Fred had said something to her. The usual compliments, I presume. And she smiled in return.
Her face wasn’t bare. But whatever she had on was perfect. Enough to make her look like an angel.
The long ends of her low ponytail dangled behind her when she finally lowered herself to enter the car.
I watched her fingers tug stray hair from her face. And her warm orbs settled anywhere but on me. Her cheeks began to redden when-
Had I been staring?
“Good evening, Sir,” I could hear her swallow.
“Damien.”
“Uh?”
“For tonight, call me Damien.” I brought the ring out from my chest pocket, handing it to her. Her eyes widened, and she accepted it with a tentative grip. Thankfully, she said nothing and shrugged it on the appropriate finger.
Of course, she knew the importance of it. It’d be childish to argue.
As I leaned my head against the seat, I ran through every little detail for tonight. When I remembered one, without turning my head, I stated “We’ve been dating for two years. We met at a coffee store. We like to keep things private.”
“Eh?” she whipped her head to me.
“We’re pretending to be engaged so we need a backstory. That would suffice.”
“Oh, okay.” Her voice was a soft whisper.
Ignoring the odd feeling in my guts, and how she threw her head to the other side, I shut my eyes momentarily.
The familiar ambiance hit me as we stepped in. Irritating lights and slow music filled the air. And people filled the space.
I instantly felt her shiver against me. Perhaps she was nervous. It wasn’t odd, considering she had seemed so on our first meeting.
Snaking my arms around her waist, I hoped to provide some sort of comfort. I’d brought her here and the least I could do was make her comfortable.
“Stay close to me,” I whispered in her ears and felt her shiver again. “And don’t speak unless asked a question.”
