“Miss Walker, your attention is required in my office.”

That’s a first. The first time, he had spoken so much over the phone.

Nervousness pricked at the ropes in my spine as I walked out of my office and pushed past the doors of his.

I suddenly felt like a little girl walking into the principal’s office. And his unyielding stare made it no better.

Wait. Stare?

This was also the first time I’d be walking into his awaiting stare. Usually, it was standing in front of his desk until he lifted his head from the pile of documents.

Documents…

There weren’t even any, in the usual arranged manner on his desk.

“You called sir,” I swallowed thickly when I reached him.

Confusion and doubt twirled in his eyes, meeting my tentative ones.

His messy hair showed that he had run his hands through it a few times. And the way his fingers drew light patterns on the desk meant he was mindless. Unsure?

Was it about his sister? The shenanigans in the elevator? Was he firing me for misconduct?

Was I overthinking everything or was something off?

Thick, dry lips parted. “You can have a seat.”

I brought a confused gaze to him. This man had never offered me a seat.

Tentatively, I sat. I squirmed lightly when he suddenly seemed to pick interest in my hair.

“Your hair, it’s-” he trailed. “The updo quite suits you.”

I blinked back the shock. My hair was in a regular ponytail. There was nothing out of the ordinary about it.

“Umm, thank you. Sir.” My eyes involuntarily scanned his head for any bumps or signs that he hit his head. Because what was he going to do next? Ask for my hair products?

“I need you to go on a date with me.”

I craned my neck to him in an instant. Whipping it around the corners of his office. Surely there must be a hidden camera, and this was all a prank?

“What? No.”

Prank aside there was no way I was going on a date with a douchebag.

“There’s payment.”

“No.”

“It’s in three days and you’d only be needed for one day.”

“I’ll have to humbly dec- “

“Renee.”

I froze once the words left his lips. It was the first time he’d say my name and my stupid body reacted to it.

My eyes met his stoic ones, though I could see the hint of desperation in them. “Think of it as a job. Just a one-off and you have the liberty to choose how much you earn at the end of the day.”
