“Then leave it.” I wasn’t in the mood to deal with whatever she had to say. Work related or not.
“I’m sorry what?” Surprise tilted her lips in a downward turn.
“Are your ears blocked?”
“Eh?”
“I don’t like to repeat myself.”
“It’s civil harassment,” She ignored my prior statement. “My client, Mae, has been harassed by a college classmate multiple times. Aside from the verbal insult, she has also recently been noticing damages to her property.”
I knew where this was heading.
“There is evidence of the verbal abuse but none for the property damage.”
“I need authority to access the CCTV ca-”
“No,” I dismissed.
She blinked slowly as if trying to comprehend. “No?”
“No.”
“But this girl is- is without parents.” Her voice wavered.
Unusual.
“She acquired the apartment with her entire savings and if the vandalism keeps going on... it- it’d become a huge financial strain on her. She is going through enough emotional distress as it is.”
My brows raised at the urgency in her voice, it almost sounded desperate? Personal?
Whatever it was, I didn’t care. Even though she looked like my next statement could tip her off the edge.
“Your concern is well appreciated. But I will not grant the request.”
“What? Why? This girl literally-”
“It’s just a Pro Bono, Miss Walker.”
Her eyes widened as thick silence grew. I could see the wheels spinning in her head before her chest puffed. I knew what was coming next and she didn’t disappoint.
“How can you say that?” Her voice wasn’t as angry as I expected it to be though.
“You’re growing an attachment with the client,” I stated dryly.
“I don’t see how that’s a crime,” she replied without hesitation. “She’s just a young girl trying to survive.”
“Then let her.”
Her chest sank, and an expression crossed her eyes. It was red, dilated, and filled with conviction. Giving me a final glance, she turned her back and walked out the door.
Leaving me with just one thought. Perhaps I was succeeding in my mission.
Chapter Five
Renee
Everything passed in a blur as I sank into the plush leather of the car. The city was bustling as always, but today it also seemed to hold a certain serenity. The only thing that came close to satiating my feelings.
