“How have you been feeling since your last appointment?”
“I feel the same. Normal.” That wasn’t a lie.
She continued asking the questions until the session ended.
I arrived at the apartment after hailing a cab. Immediately heading for a hot bath to wash off the sad feeling that accompanied the doctor’s appointment.
The appointment only deepened the realization that I was alone. Stepping out of the shower, I slipped into more comfortable and protective clothes, before moving to make pancakes.
Don’t judge me – Cravings.
Once my dinner was done, I settled in front of my small TV and turned on Netflix.
To watch a documentary or an action movie?
I was still thinking about what to watch when a small knock interrupted me. I breezed past the couch when I reached the door, opening it with a wide smile.
“Maria, I should have-” My breath caught in my throat as I took in the figure before me.
My heart picked up a wild pace, and my blood slowly grew cold.
What ishedoing here?
Suddenly a sharp pain pricked my heart, and I felt all the emotions rush out. I felt everything I’d tried to keep at bay gush out in waves.
“Renee,” he croaked.
I shut my eyes, to prevent the emotions from crumbling my being.
He couldn’t be here. He shouldn’t.
“Renee,” he breathed again. This time I heard the hesitance in his voice.
With a heavy heart, I reopened my eyes to glance at him. His expression matched his voice. Broken.
I moved my eyes from his pale skin to his chapped lips, hurt engulfing my heart at the sight.
His hair was untamed. His beard seemed to have grown out. And there was a slight stubble dusting his cheeks.
His suited shoulders hung low, shielding arms that were folded into a clenched fist. Only once had I seen him look this way.
Releasing a shaky breath at the memory, I finally met his eyes. They were dull. Almost empty. Except for the small hopeful glint in them.
My stomach clenched when he moved his hand to his hair. Suddenly it all became too much.
All I felt... Him.
Without another word, I slammed the door. Securing all the locks, before sliding to the floor.
Fuck, I couldn’t still feel this way. I shouldn’t feel anything for a man who’d thrown me out without a benefit of the doubt.
ChapterTwenty-Eight
Damien
Once Sarah left, I immediately began finding out where Renee was. Hours of searching yielded nothing. Her number seemed to no longer exist.
It was like she’d just shut herself off from the world. Like she deliberately didn’t want to be found.
