Chapter Twenty-Six
Damien
“Sir. You have a meeting for 1 p.m.,” I eyed Brielle. “With Mr. Maxwell. It is–”
“I know. There are still three hours till then. Next time, notify me through email. You can leave.”
She nodded and hurried out the door.
I felt guilty for reacting that way. After all, she was just a new assistant. John and the HR had finally found a replacement.
But I couldn’t control the anger that filled me at seeing a different assistant. I couldn’t control the anger at the memories that lingered.
I hadn’t forgotten. I didn’t even try to. Somehow the pain attached to those memories was the only thing keeping me going.
I turned to glance out the window. It was a new year. An opportunity for a fresh start.
But I knew I couldn’t have that. Not like this.
Mr. Reynolds had signed the contract. Despite the controversies around….my fiancée and me.
Of course, the media had noticed her absence. And there were many versions of our unfortunate story.
Some thought she was sick. Some thought we were separated. And others simply tried to come up with frivolous reasons for her absence.
Mr. Reynold was aware of all this– the news. But surprisingly, he hadn’t asked any questions. He’d signed the contract just like we’d agreed.
Love is a beautiful thing, Damien. I hope it prevails.
He had said the words with a smile wrinkling his eyes. And those had been his final words before he left the city.

I’m sorry man. Those had been the only words on his lips.
Even though I knew it, it was hard to accept. I still struggled with the reality that she–
But the evidence was as clear as day…
Fuck.
Life felt different after her departure. But just as predicted, as the days passed, the crescendo slowly dropped. And the news slipped into the clutches of what had been.
The trending topic now seemed to be about a company that had a recent breakthrough in some sort of technology.
This was all I wanted. The deal was signed. And I got rid of my assistant.
But now, I’d give it all up to have her here. With me. But that was a fantasy.
Slowly, I turned the chair to the table when the door opened. My brows furrowed when I noticed Sarah walking-
No. Striding elegantly towards me.
I hadn’t seen her in the past few weeks. Even when my parents had reached out, she didn’t. I’d thought she had returned to Chicago.
“Hello, Brother.” There was something different about her voice. Eerily different.
I furrowed my brows even more, meeting her eyes. Her eyes, too, seemed different.
