“We got married a year later. And she became pregnant. So I have a family. A beautiful wife, two adult children. And two grandkids in high school.”

“Seeing them is always something I look forward to. I would never imagine life without them.”

My cheeks hurt from my wide smile as my hands found my tummy.

Now, I didn’t want to imagine life without him. Damien Knight. And I couldn’t wait to tell him.

After a few hours of swerving through traffic, we arrived at the mansion. Happiness surged through my veins as I skipped happily to the doorway.

I was barely two steps in when I noticed a hunched form on the sofa. Suddenly the air was thick and a foreboding feeling washed through my guts.

The usual confidence in his demeanour was gone.

I swallowed thickly when he turned. My heart skipped a beat when I took in his face. His jaw was set in a hard clench.

Dread filled me as his gaze held mine for the longest time. I could feel the raw emotions reeking from him. His eyes held it all.

Anger— No, fury. Disappointment. And hurt.

He raised his hands. It was then I noticed a piece of paper between his fist.

My breathing increased. Before my gaze found his blazing ones.

“Da-”

“Don’t I don’t want to hear anymore lies,” he seethed. Flinging the paper to my face.

A wave of dizziness washed through me. And my eyes widened in horror when I took in its content. The media. My signature. My name.

Suddenly my breathing ceased. It all seemed blurry. My hands shook and my whole body followed.

“You know what is at stake. Yet you choose to do this,” he gritted. “And have the decency to flaunt it.”

No. I didn’t do this.

Hot tears blurred my vision at the spite in his voice. “Damien, I—”

“I must say you put on a pretty good facade. I never suspected a thing.” he took two daunting steps closer.

“...What else did you intend to spill? That I murdered my son?”

The words hit me, constraining my chest.

His jaw clenched. And his fist followed.

My lips quivered as my heart thumped wildly. “No, I swear I did-”

“Leave,” his voice was deathly calm. “Take your things and don’t return.”

Damien

Threeweeks later…

I felt betrayed.

Three weeks later, the burden was still unbearable. With each day, it became heavier. Everything became heavier.
