I narrowed my lips as I watched him take a greedy gulp. His tan skin seemed smoother now that I studied him. His adventures did wonders for him.

Or was it because he’s a young blood.

Anyway, it was a pity that he’d end up taking over his father’s law firm. Which ranked… six, I think, in the state.

He’s in his mid-thirties. He already should have taken over the company.

If his nonchalance didn’t already show that the whole taking over was against his will, then the way his brows wrinkled at my statement did.

“Please don’t remind me,” he gulped.

“You’d have to do it someday. Soon.”

“Where’s your fiancée?” He ignored my prior statement.

“Why?” I eyed him wearily.

“I don’t know I was just thinking maybe we could go-”

“The only place you’re going is out of my building.” My voice came out hard.

A smirk hovered on his lips once he pulled the glass away.

“I didn’t peg you as the lovey type. But I knew somewhere under those tough—”

His words were interrupted by the shrill sound of his ringtone. His expression morphed into frustration as he stared at the screen. His shoulders slouched before he picked it.

“Mom,” he answered in a monotone voice.

The woman seemed to be speaking— yelling.

“But–” he tried to speak. Her yells got louder.

“On my way.” I smirked at the frown that coated his lips.

“It seems you have errands to run.”

He scoffed, handing me the empty glass. “I’ll be back.” Slowly, he retreated with eyes locked on mine until he was out the door.

I shook my head.

Silence descended again. But the bubble had already been popped.

Taking a seat, I contemplated calling her. Renee. But I decided against it.

There was no reason to. She’d completed all pending tasks. And I sensed she needed rest.

Just as I refreshed my mail, my phone rang. Holding my breath, I picked it. Already sensing who it was.

“Damien,” Ariana greeted.

“Ariana,” my heart suddenly picked up its pace.

“What news do you have?”

I had deliberately tried to not think of this moment. The day I would receive a call from her. But I had enjoyed the brief moments of serenity. Now it was time to face reality.

I heard her take a deep breath. “It is done.”
