“Wow,” Sierra breathed. And I nodded.
It was breathtaking. All of it. And they were in my favourite colour.
Coincidence or—
“Girl this is super beautiful and cute,” she squealed.
I know. I know.
After some more talking, and confession of how much we missed each other, Sierra ended the call.
Her mother was getting better. And her brother was responding to treatment. I couldn’t lie that was enough good news to last me decades.
Finally, her struggles were paying off. I couldn’t be happier.
I glanced at the time and it was nearing 4 p.m. As I moved to start preparing, I caught the Rubik’s cube somewhere in between my pillows.
To think that he had scrambled it in just a few minutes was confusing. Who am I kidding? Everything about him is confusing. Everything about this is confusing.
The conversation in his office, his reaction to Jack. The kiss.
Heck, even the reactions at the office. It was enough that the magazine had profiled that one picture of me and my boss.
Of course, what had I expected? I had expected no less. I got no less glances at work too.
Ugh!
Before all this —this life, this job— I’d just been a normal girl with endless goals and struggles. If I wasn’t thinking about bills then it was a success.
Never had I felt this much. Never had I been so angry yet intrigued. Never had I been so indifferent yet disturbed.
And never had my heart been this involved in such ordeals.
I wanted it to stop. All these…thoughts. So, instead of thinking, I focused on my heartbeat.
Letting its wild pace hammer me into oblivion.
Before long, I passed out on the bed, only to be awoken a few minutes later by a soft knock.
I opened the door and was met with Fred’s smiley face. “This is a gentle reminder that the dinner is in one hour.”
An hour?
“Thank you, Fred,” I managed a small smile through my panic.
“My pleasure, ma’am. I’ll see you in an hour.”
Once he turned his back, I slammed the door shut.
I was tempted to call Sierra again. She knew how to ease my panic. But she was with her family so I had to hold my own.
Shit, I really overslept.
I didn’t know what dinner it was. But I knew it wasn’t out of the ordinary to go on outings for the public eye.
In a flash, I reached the bathroom. After a couple of minutes, I was done with everything.
I heaved a sigh when I stared at the mirror.
