“Thank you… for everything.”

She patted my back. “The pleasure is all mine.”

I smiled as Fred helped me into the backseat. He returned my smile with a warm one. Somehow, his smile reminded me of Maria’s, and how she’d bade me goodbye with a smile.

I watched Fred assume his position in the driver’s seat, recalling the joy in his eyes when he’d told me how glad he was that I’d returned.

I was glad too. Glad that I was here. With Damien.

Despite all odds… despite his sister.

When I asked how he’d figured out that the evidence had been planted, he said Sarah had visited his office to flaunt her victory.

He’d explained why she’d done it. I didn’t know how to feel. But he’d assured that she had returned to Chicago.

And would never come close again.

Somehow, he’d recorded their conversation and had threatened to release it to the world if she ever showed face in New York again.

Sarah had a lot at stake. Her husband’s reputation and a criminal record.

I didn’t ask. But I knew why he hadn’t done the needful. He could file a lawsuit for forgery. I could too.

But there was no point. I already had my happiness.

Perhaps that’s why Damien let it be. After all, Sarah was still his sister; and I knew a part of him felt guilty about her allegations.

Regardless, everything seemed to have fallen into place. The deal had already been signed.

My life was finally perfect. The perfect picture of the love life I’d dreamed of.

“We’ve arrived, ma’am,” Alfred’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts.

In the blink of an eye, he opened my side of the door and helped me out.

The cool breeze gently kissed my skin as I gaped at the vast waters that seemed to stretch to infinity.

The beach.

Alfred held my hands as we passed a sandy pathway until we reached another one, littered with rose petals… and candles.

That led to a table for two, shielded by a wooden canopy, adorned with flowers. And right in front of it stood Damien in all his suited glory.

“I’ll leave you now,” Alfred announced. Then he retreated.

Holding my breath, I trailed my steps through the path, the scents of roses mixed with the salty breeze filling my nostrils.

I’d been on multiple dates with him in the last two months but none of them came close to this.

Maybe it was the glint in his eyes, or how the air seemed to carry a different aura.

He stretched his hand, and I placed mine in his when I reached him. I shivered when he leaned down to gently place a kiss on the back of my palm.

When he raised himself to stare at me, my heart skipped a beat. His stare was soft and lingering.

Butterflies fluttered wildly in my stomach, and I felt myself falling in love all over again.

He led me to the table, pulling out a chair for me, before taking his seat.
