I had work to do.
I unlocked the bolts of my door before opening it, instantly revelling in the fresh breeze when I stepped out.
Even the breeze did nothing to ease my tense mind.
Hum, Renee. Hum.
Just as I opened my mouth to do so, something caught my attention. How had I missed him before?
Right there, on a corner of my front porch, was Damien. Standing stiffly.
He looked distraught.
His hair was messy and his shirt had wrinkles that lined his otherwise pressed sleeves.
Did he… sleep here?
When I realized I’d been staring for a moment, I quickly shook my head, and turned away.
“Renee,” he sighed just as I moved to take a step off the porch.
No.
“Please just hear me out.” He took a step forward.
Hear me out…Only if he did that when it all happened. Then I wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t be here.
“I’m… I’m sorry.” he started. “I know no amount of apologies would do justice to what I did to you.”
He took another step. This time, with one hand in his hair.
“Fuck. I hurt you… I really did.” he shook his head. “But please just give us a chance.”
I should go. If I didn’t want to be late for work. If I didn’t want to listen to any of this right now. But something about the way his eyes held mine held me in place.
“You don’t have to say anything right now if you don’t want to. Heck, I don’t even need you to answer right now. I know I’m in no position to make demands but all I want you to do is think about it.”
I inhaled a sharp breath as I watched him walk until he was a few feet away from me. His heavy orbs bounced around in their sockets as we stared at each other.
“Please…” he trailed.
I suppressed the surge of emotion that shot through my veins as I took in his distraught face.
“Okay.” I swallowed, and instantly turned around. Luckily for me, I spotted a cab just when I reached the sidewalk.
I could still feel his eyes on me as I climbed into the back seat. And for a split second, I wanted to turn.
But I didn’t. Instead, I focused my confused mind on the driver, and gave him the address to my office.
I sighed as we sped to my destination. Humming didn’t do anything, and it didn’t look like it would.

Time seemed to pass rapidly as I typed away on my laptop. I’d been sitting for hours.
My back hurt, my arm hurt, and every other thing, including my head, hurt too.
Even Cherry’s comments did nothing to alleviate my mood. And I hated it.
