I scoot directly behind her; my sixth sense is telling me she’s going to need to be restrained. I can practically see the smoke coming out of her ears.
I glance at Knox and he’s fucking smirking. My Princess is about to violently wipe that smirk right off his face. I count silently in my head and at 7, my princess erupts from the passenger seat. She is fury personified.
I don’t even understand what she’s saying, but she’s clawing at his face and the car is all over the road. I unbuckle and reach for her arms to pull her back in the seat.
“Not now, Princess. I promise, I will hold the motherfucker down for you and you can do your worst. But not now.”
She’s gasping for air in the passenger seat, and I hold her arms firmly, my arms coming around the whole seat the keep her back. She’s silent for about 5 minutes, and Knox has not reacted at all, which is fucking frightening.
He slows down at an intersection and is about to turn left. The blinker is echoing loudly in the silent car. I loosen my grip and instantly regret doing so. As Knox accelerates, I watch in absolute fucking terror, as Brynn opens the car door, as the car swerves around. The momentum of the car is working against me and I’m scrambling to get a hold of something, anything to keep her from hurtling herself out the door. She’s frantically pushing at the seatbelt release and leaning out the door.
Knox is shouting and I’m trying to scramble over the seat to shut the door.
“Stop the fucking car! Jesus fucking Christ, you are a piece of work. Stop the fucking car!”
He pulls over and against my better judgment I clock him in the jaw. I’m hurrying out of the car to collect Brynn and give her a few moments to try and come to terms with this crushing new development.
I don’t even know what owning a slave means, other than the obvious. I need more information. I slide my hand to the back of her neck and hold her while she marches away.
“I’m not going back, Declan. No fucking way. He doesn’t own me. He will never own me.”
“No, Angel in all of the important ways, he will never own you. Let me see those papers.”
I skim the contents, and on the second page that is not notarized, there is a spot for Brynn to sign her life away to this man. There are also rules.
This is fucking bad, I need to find an attorney to see how much of this can be enforced when the document is not signed, witnessed, or notarized.
I never thought in my lifetime that people would ever be sold or owned ever again, but here I am. My stomach curdles and I might lose my breakfast. Fucking Knox, I’m in disbelief that this is actually a thing and my gut wrenches hard because it’s all directed towards the woman Ilove. Love? I take a breath, and the guy inside my head who is not an asshole says, yes you asshole, love.
“Angel, we’ll find a way to undo this, okay?”
I grip her neck and pull her into me.
“No fucking way am I going to allow this. Do you hear me, Brynn?”
She nods.
“Okay, baby let’s get out of here and get back on the road. You are sitting in the back with me. Fuck him.”
She nods again, and my stomach lurches because she’s not talking. She’s going to explode at some point, and that terrifies me.
My princess wants blood.
Hours later, I’m keyed up because we’ve ridden in silence for hours. I know this is the lull before the storm and I’m waiting for one of us to fucking lose our shit.
It’s dark again and I’ve been looking out the window trying to figure out where we are headed. It’s difficult though because we’ve been traveling on back roads and the road signage is nonexistent.
The interstates were mostly destroyed by the bombings. We ride into another small town, poking along between the blinking traffic lights and Knox pulls off and parks at a decent-looking motel. He gets out and heads into the office.
Brynn is asleep on my shoulder, and I shake her awake.
“C’mon Princess, it’s time to rise and shine.”
She mumbles something sleepily and I brush her hair away from her face and smile. Her eyes are luminous, but she covers her mouth with her hand.
“Ugh, I need to brush my teeth.”
“You slept pretty hard, figured you needed it.”
