Once you know the depths of someone’s depravity, it’s a simple matter to bend them in whatever way you want. And whatever my own appetites, something tells me that Adam Williams and his pack have darker tastes than even mine. I can spot evil from a mile away, see the darkness curdling their faces, swirling in their eyes.
Seth stands. “I’ll find out.”
I have no doubts. There’s nothing he can’t uncover. We all have our part to play, and his is critical.
He pauses at the door, and my eyes flick to him. “I’m attending the omega auctions tomorrow.”
I barely resist the urge to roll my eyes.
The auctions. Nothing but a primping, glorified shopping trip for alphas to choose where they want to sink their knot. All the pretty birds on display, primping and preening. Each one more tawdry and vacuous than the last. Any omega worth their salt is snapped up well before they need to go anywhere near that place.
I prefer my prey with at least a modicum of intelligence. It makes it all the better when I finally catch them.
“You won’t find what you want there,” I point out drily. Seth tilts his head.
“We haven’t been for a while. Besides, I have it on good authority that the Williams pack is attending.”
Now that, at least, gets my attention. “Are they, now?”
Maybe I can muster up just a little enthusiasm. After all, prey comes in several different forms.
Maybe a different kind of hunt is exactly what I need.
Chapter three – Nova
Curling my shoulders forward, I blow the top of my hot chocolate, savoring the scent of creamy, hot cocoa and marshmallows.
Delicious.
My mother would have a shit fit if she saw me with this and the chunky chocolate muffin on the table in front of me, but life is far too short to worry about how wide the gap between my thighs is.
Besides, I have bigger issues.
Melia apologizes breathlessly as she drops down into the seat in front of me. “I’m so sorry! Taylor and Owen… well.” She giggles.
I have to grin at the flush covering her cheeks, even as I shove down the teeny bit of envy I feel that my friend is mated to possibly the nicest alpha pack in the city.
“So mated life is treating you well?” I tease lightly. Melia laughs, bright and open, her blue eyes sparkling with sheer happiness.
The lump that appears in my throat is unexpected, but I give her my full attention as she gives me all the details about her new mating.
All the details. Every single one.
“Mel,” I hiss, my cheeks flaming. “I don’t need to know that!”
She wiggles her eyebrows at me. “Oh, please. Like you've never taken a knot. Someday, it’s going to come in handy when you need to make an alpha beg, Nova. Speaking of which, I want to talk about you.”
Grimacing, I press my finger into the last of the muffin crumbs, half-heartedly wondering if I should get another one. Make the most of it before Adam puts me back on the strict, heavy-on-the-lettuce diet plan he had me following.
God, I was fucking blind.
I’m frowning into my cup, lost in my own thoughts until Melia’s prod makes me jump.
“Ah… sorry,” I say sheepishly. “Lots going on.”
She frowns. “Nova… is it true? About the auctions?”
I groan, covering my face with my hands. “Who told you?”
