"Then why were you at the theatre that night?"
"I was there to take something from Angus more precious than his own life." His hazel eyes held a spark of satisfaction.
"You were there to kill me."
"Good girl," he crooned. "That's right, but your grandfather's death got in the way."
"Where's Hamish?" she asked. "Where have you taken him?"
"I'll take you to him. Then we'll decide who lives or dies." He took her hand, leading her down the winding staircase. The party had picked up as more guests arrived, but no one seemed to notice them. She looked to the entrance for the bouncer, but he was gone. They left through a private door that led out back, to a car park. A black Land Rover with its windows darkened was waiting for them. She got in the back seat next to Sokolov.
Pim clutched her handbag, the weight of the gun a talisman. There was no doubt in her mind. If it came to it, she knew she would use it this time.
