Garcia caught the bitch by the back of her neck. It was the wrong angle to tear out a throat, but perfect for a kill shake. He threw his weight hard into the motion, flinging her side to side, attempting to break her spine.

Zeven bit down on his growl of glee. The scent of blood and the exhilaration of the battle rushed through him. The coming end might be the desired result but the wolf in him cried out to jump into the fray and help finish off the weaker wolf.

The Coyote Clan wolves must have felt the same urges and a few in wolf form looked on the verge of giving into them.

Then with a suddenness and violence that had Zeven jerking upright and shoving Harley behind him, the Coyote Clan wolves let out screams of pain and fell to the floor in the throes of terrible agony.

Garcia dropped Sheila. His menace shifted toward Jack Donnelly.

He’d barely moved when Sheila changed forms and drove a long knife up through his chest. She shoved Garcia’s howling wolf body over and raised her bloody knife to take another final plunge into his heart.

But she’d never take Garcia’s life or any other for that matter.

Deven fired three rounds of silver into her chest, ending the fight and her cruelties forever. “Fair fight was more than a suggestion.”

But the other wolves continued to writhe on the floor, tearing at the collars and their own skin. Though a couple of them had managed to crawl to Garcia who was sitting up, pressing on his knife wound.

Harley was the one to put it together. “That other guy must have the controller.” But the human had darted out the door with all the confusion. Harley jerked from his arms and ran out through the broken courtyard doors with Deven and Zeven close on her heels.

She caught Donnelly as he yanked open the door to his car parked in front of his garage. She grabbed his shoulder and spun him around. And then floored his ass, punching him out with a single swing.

“Holy shit,” Deven said, ripping the controller from the human’s limp hand and then crushing it under his heel. “You have one hell of a mate there, my brother.”

Zeven couldn’t agree more. He dragged Harley back into his arms. “Yes, I certainly do.” This courageous and honorable woman was his forever. When he slowly drew back, he pulled up her hand to kiss away any damage.

“I’d better get back inside to settle the Coyote Clan.” Deven cuffed Donnelly to the door handle. “Just so you know…” their gazes locked. “Zeven, you were never my target. Sheila and Jack Donnelly were.”

“Then why…?”

“Because you were most likely next on the list, and they wouldn’t have sent me.” Deven’s lips tightened into a slight smile. “I couldn’t risk losing the only other member of my clan, even if I’m not cut out for life living in a clan. Think about that job offer though. It is legit. Division Eight could use you and so could I.”

With that he was gone, leaving Harley and Zeven alone with the unconscious human. They moved off to lean against Deven’s sedan.

Harley snuggled back into his arms.“Will you be taking that position with his agency?”

“Do you think I should? How would you feel about me working with him, doing what he does?”

Her hands slid up under the tattered cloth of his shirt and caressed over his chest.“I don’t know how to feel. I want you safe, but I think that perhaps being with Deven will be more important than forcing you to take up a life of leisure.”She petted his flesh but couldn’t hide the fact that she was also checking how his wounds were healing.

Regardless of her intention, her touch sent flares of arousal through him. He cupped his hands around her ass and pulled her tight against him so he could nuzzle at the side of her neck.“I am curious about him.”

“The job would offer you a chance to get to know Deven and if it doesn’t work out, we can always try ranching.”

His gaze met hers in surprise. “Ranching?”

“Well see, if I understand correctly, you have a lot of land somewhere. Baby cows are awfully cute. I thought maybe we could use some of that money and get a place.”

Zeven kissed his mate then. Did it really matter what he did or where he did it, so long as she was by his side and happy? “What about your work? There is nothing to keep you from going back to the hospital now.”

“Ah, yeah I guess I could.”

“Is that what you want?”

She looked hesitant for only a moment. “Yes, I do want to go back if I can. Do you think Deven’s agency might be able to clear things up with the police?”

He didn’t have an answer for that question. “We can see if he can. He did say it was a government agency so maybe he’ll have some pull.” He was just glad to see her smiling again. Knowing she wasn’t in danger and would be able to do whatever made her happy, it was all he needed.

“You know, even if I couldn’t go back to finish my residency, I’d still be a doctor and find ways to use my training to help people. I’d already decided that we will belong together. No matter what.”
