I settle down onto my towel and close my eyes again. He’s wrong. I’ll never beg for more than a friends with benefits agreement.
Chapter10
Colt
On the drive home from the beach, we keep the windows down and the music pumping. Dressed only in my board-shorts, my hair still damp and sandy from the ocean, I’m feeling relaxed and happy. It’s rare for me to skip lectures, but today was worth it. I’m not sure what happened between me and Sassy before, but I’m not complaining about it. I’ve never met a girl who runs as hot and cold as she does, which keeps me on my toes. But when she’s hot, she’s smoking hot, and I’m drawn to her like a moth to a flame. I need to be careful not to fly too close.
“Can we stop at a supermarket on the way back?” Sassy shouts over the music, not looking up from her phone.
“Sure.”
A few minutes later, I’m parking at a supermarket on the outskirts of town. I pull a shirt on before I follow Sassy in to the shop, and towards the baking aisle. Once there, she picks up a packet of flour, some icing sugar, and handpicks some cake decorating items. She opens her large tote, glances around, then throws the items inside. Turning to me, Sassy winks, then walks right back out of the supermarket. I take a moment to pick my jaw up off the ground before following behind her.
“Sass, what are you doing?” I whisper when I catch up to her outside of the shop. “I have money. I’ll pay for that stuff.”
“Nah, I’m good.” She shrugs and strolls along as though nothing just happened. I glance nervously behind me. This girl doesn’t have a good track record of getting away with stealing. Or does she? How often does she do this?
“Seriously though, I’ll pay. Let’s go back in.”
“Stop being such a good boy.” Sassy rolls her eyes. “It’s fine. They’re a big company, they’ll just write off the losses.”
“I don’t think it’s as straightforward as that,” I frown. “I’m pretty sure they’ll keep hiking up the prices to cover the theft.”
“Does it look like I care much about prices?” She winks at me.
“Sassy!”
“I’m only teasing. They won’t raise prices over one packet of flour, Colt. They drop more than that while packing shelves. Relax.”
I shake my head as we reach the car. The girl sure has confidence.
“You’ll be working off a debt at the supermarket next if you aren’t careful.” I joke as I start up the engine.
“I knew you couldn’t handle me.” She pokes her tongue out at me.
“I can handle you fine.” I think about how I was handling her at the beach just a couple of hours ago.
Sassy reaches into her bag and pulls out two sour straps, handing one to me.
“Where’d this come from?” I ask cautiously.
“I nicked it on the way out.” She says, laughing at my face. “Don’t say I never give you anything.”
“Thanks.” I roll my eyes, but bite into the strap all the same.
“Can we make one more stop before home?” Sassy asks.
“Sure. A bank? A jewellery store?”
“Funny. No. It’s a house not too far from campus. I’ll direct you when we’re close.”
When Sassy tells me to turn down Digby Street, I raise my eyebrows. She’s full of surprises, and I don’t know what to expect. Is she buying drugs? Firearms? Who knows, but this street has a dodgy reputation. She tells me to pull up to a house which, although rundown, doesn’t look too scary.
Sassy pulls her phone out and hits a number.
“Britt? I’m here.” She hangs up and watches the door of the house in front of us.
“Who lives here?” I ask, resisting the urge to whisper. “Is this your dealer or something?”
