One minute, I was in my apartment trying to survive an earthquake and now, I’m at Brighton Academy.
None of this makes sense.
I sprint to the exits. Thrusting the doors open, I glance around the sprawling estate.
Outside is a perfect blue sky.
Lemon-drop sun.
Sea of emerald green grass.
Perfectly pruned bushes.
To the left of the driveway, there’s a huge sign with the posh Brighton Academy logo. A building glints in the distance. It’s the suites where the students live.
The suites are set up like hotel rooms, each one uniquely designed and decorated to their owner’s personal tastes.
But not every room is as lavish as the one I woke up in.
The scholarship kids live in the basement. Catherine will share one of the cramped dorm rooms with another girl—Lassandra. She’s a villain who’ll turn around and betray Catherine when she realizes that Hawk is in love with her.
Gosh, I hate Lassandra. I wonder if she’ll show up in this dream.
A gentle breeze caresses my face.
The scent of hibiscus floats on the air.
I pull my hair off my neck and wipe at the sweat that’s building on my skin.
It feels so real.
My subconscious is surprisingly detailed.
Up ahead, there’s a bridge—the setting for one of Catherine and Hawk’s romantic dates later in the movie.
Maybe if I take a dive into the water, I might wake up.
I start running to the bridge, but stop abruptly.
Why am I rushing to leave this dream?
It’s not like I have anything to look forward to when I wake up.
A grin climbs my face.
I can do anything I want.
Anything.
There are no consequences here.
I tap my chin. What should I do first?
A glance to my left reveals a huge motorcycle parked out front. The keys are in the ignition as if the machine was waiting for me. As if it’s practically screaming, ‘ride me, Shanel’.
With a grin, I scramble toward the bike and answer the call.
