Seth gave me his dimpled smile. "They won't. I promise."

And then I will have to watch you impregnate the other women, I thought shuddering.

"I could never share you." I didn't know where these words came from, but they left my lips, and it was too late to take them back.

"Let's tackle this one step at a time," he suggested.

"Behlial wants seven sons, right?" I asked.

Seth nodded.

"Fine, I'll have seven sons then." Even though the idea of having just one and handing him over to Behlial and Ishtar horrified me.

"Lilith," Seth's voice was reasonable and calm and got my attention. I looked at him. "One step at a time. It will all be well, I swear, karamia."

I took his face in both of my hands. "Seth."

"I swear."

I didn't know how he could swear something like that, but I believed him, had to believe him, if I didn't want to go crazier than I already stood on the verge of.

"Hold me?" I asked in a shaking voice.

"Gladly." He rose, pulling me into his arms to carry me to the bed, where he carefully laid me down.

"Karamia."

I rose and pulled the dress over my head. Besides a pair of panties, I wore nothing underneath. "Make me forget?" I asked.

His lips were instantly on mine, only too happy to oblige my request.

And he did make me forget, I even napped a little after. When I woke it was to the same picture I had awoken to earlier, and I pretended that everything in between had been nothing but a nightmare.

My stomach rumbled and I used the sheet to cover myself and walk over to the table.

"Hi." Seth smiled at me, looking up from his tablet.

"Hi." I smiled and began to lift domes from the covered dishes.

"You guys don't happen to have some coffee, do you?"

"Coffee?" he asked.

I sighed. "Never mind, it would have been too good to—"

"I can get you coffee," Seth said with a smile so bright it seemed to promise he would do anything for me and was all too happy to have found something he could do to please me.

"How do you spell that?"

We were still speaking in Sumerian, and I doubted there was a Sumerian word for coffee, so I spelled it in English and watched as he typed quickly into his tablet in what seemed like a text message app. I held a snicker back at the thought of aliens using text messages, but I didn't want to think of Seth as an alien right then. I just wanted to think of him as an incredible man I had met, whom I was having incredible sex with. Nothing else. I just wanted—needed—to forget all the rest, even if it was only for a little while. My sanity demanded it.

When Seth was done with hisorder, I sat on his lap and fed him crepes, which he said he had never tried before.

"All this food," he gestured at the array of dishes on the table, "has been brought here from Adama, to make the transition for you maidens easier."

"I doubt this happened on Behlial's orders," I wagered.

He smiled. "You're correct, this was done after Ishtar took over."
