Before anybody could intercept Sara, she slashed the dagger across her arm and dribbled her blood over Balaam's headless neck. Lilith gagged but still tried to rush to Sara's side. I caught her arm just in time to hold her back, I didn't trust Abaddon or Behlial with her close to them.
"A heartwarming gesture child, but utterly useless, let me assure you," Behlial chuckled.
Ishtar quickly moved to Sara's side and gently took the dagger from her, before she wrapped the young woman's arm with her scarf.
"Come, dear. There is nothing you can do for him," Ishtar coaxed Sara to her feet.
Sobbing, Sara threw herself against our mother, who, with one glaring, contemptuous look toward Behlial and Abaddon, led her from the room. The rest of us remained frozen until Sara's cries of distress faded.
"Well, what do you have to say in your defense?" Behlial railed against Abaddon.
"By any means necessary," Abaddon cited what had been drilled into us, holding Judith close to him.
Behlial shook his head. "Let me make this perfectly clear, pups. You are not to use your brides or anybody else to do the deed you are supposed to deliver. You are supposed to kill your brothers, not othersforyou. Do you understand?"
Lilith whimpered next to me, and I pulled her closer. I yearned to comfort her more, to take her away from this, but I feared showing too much emotion toward her in front of the others. They already knew we were bonded; I didn't need to show my weakness any more than that.
"Clean this mess up!" Behlial yelled at the servants, who appeared from their hiding spots behind pillars and shadows.
"And you," Behlial pointed at Abaddon, before he yelled for his guards. "You will stay in your quarters until further notice. I need to decide what to do with you."
He turned on his heel and gave us a contemptuous once over. "Dismissed, take your breakfast in your room, fuck your little brides, and give me my sons. Azazel, you will take that one with you." Behlial pointed at Dina who had fled behind a pillar. "You should have enough stamina to please both of your brides."
I shuddered. This was not how it was done; usually the killer of the bride's mate took her, but I supposed that in Abaddon's case, since Behlial hadn't decided on a course of action yet, he didn't want to waste anotherbreedingminute.
Azazel held his hand out for Dina, who reluctantly moved forward. Phoebe, Azazel's bride, watched with wide eyes, unsure what this all meant.
"Come," I placed my arm around Lilith and pulled her back down the corridor we had taken to get here.
"What does this all mean?" she asked in a shaking voice.
"As we eliminate our brothers one by one, the winner inherits that brother's bride," I answered her with a heavy heart.
"To do what?" I had expected the question but hated myself for answering it.
"To impregnate her if she isn't already."
Toimpregnateherifshe isn't already. Seth words echoed in my head, threatening to make me sick.
"And the women get no say in this?" I asked with trepidation.
Seth stared at me. "As little as us brothers."
"He can't force you to… to have sex," I argued but even I knew my argument was weak. Behlial was the King of Darkness, he could force anybody to do anything he wanted.
He could force Seth by threatening me, I knew that with absolute certainty.
I felt sick to my stomach as the realization of what was happening truly hit me, as I truly allowed myself for the first time to think this entire sick scenario through.
There would only be one brother left standing at the end of this despicable contest, the others would be dead. Dead!
And if Seth won, he would have to… impregnate the women who weren't, and I would have to sit by and let it happen.
I recoiled; this truly was hell.
How could I ever sit by and watch—not literally of course—Seth making love to the other women? Even if he just fucked them… it was inconceivable. Another thought hit me,what if they aren't willing… this time my stomach truly heaved, and I freed myself from Seth's grip just in time to throw up into a corner and not on him.
"Lilith." He sidled up to me, but I raised my hand. I needed a moment.
