“We have to do something.”
“Fine, but no gifts! Why don’t I make dinner and we can watch a movie?”
“You can cook?”
“Believe it or not, I can. I just haven’t in a long time—cooking for myself doesn’t excite me that much.”
Maverick was curious to see this domestic side of her. “Okay, let’s do that, then.”
“It’s a date.” She quickly added, “But not really.”
He didn’t respond, but inside he was screaming,Itisa date, dammit.
“I need to go into the office today. Are you okay to get Sawyer alone?”
“Wait. The office? You have an office?”
“Complete with a staff and everything.”
“Have you gone in since I’ve been here?”
“I stopped in to let my assistant, Pam, know I was going to be working from home. She sends me everything I need to work on and handles the rest herself.”
“How did I not know you have an office?”
“I own the building the office is in, too. Actually, I have several office buildings.
“How’s brag camp going?”
That made him laugh out loud. “I’m not bragging, I’m just telling you since you seemed upset you didn’t know I had an office.”
“I was just teasing. Thank you for telling me, although it’s completely unnecessary. It’s none of my business.”
“Mmm, it kind of is. If I died of a heart attack, half my estate would go to you. Actually, more than half. A half and a third of the other half that’s Sawyer’s.”
“Wouldn’t it just go to Nick and Nash?”
He furrowed his brow. “No. I have three sons, and a wife.”
“But we barely got married…”
“I redrafted my will the day I found out Sawyer was mine. Then again when you signed the prenup.”
“Oh.”
“So, back to my original question. Are you okay to get Sawyer by yourself?”
“Of course I am. And if I wasn’t, I probably should start practicing since I’m going to be doing it alone here in a month. I just need the car seat.”
He shook his head. “I got one for your car, too. It’s already installed.”
She looked at him dumbfounded. “You did that?”
“Of course. It made sense to have one in each car. The nice thing is, the base is the same, so the seat and stroller are interchangeable.”
“Oh, wow. That is nice. Thank you.”
That was one of many things he loved about her. She always made sure to express her gratitude whenever anyone did something nice for her.
