Although, he knew damn well she’d liked it. At least, at the time. But, just like New Year’s Eve, she seemed to instantly regret it once they were dressed again. Maybe she really did have a boyfriend and felt guilty for being with Maverick?

That would explain a lot.

He sat down to eat the lunch Juanita had prepared for them.

“Can I ask you something?”

Sawyer was asleep in the baby sling on her chest. “Sure.”

“What’s your boyfriend’s name?”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “Why?”

“I’m not going to seek him out, if that’s what you’re worried about. I’m just curious.”

“Well, considering I’m married to you, he’s no longer my boyfriend.”

“What’s yourex-boyfriend’s name?”

“My ex’s name?”

It was his turn to look at her suspiciously. In his experience, anytime someone repeated a question, it was so they could stall for time to think of a lie.

“Yeah. What’s his name.”

“Casey Montoya.”

“Do you talk to him anymore?”

“Again, I’m married to you, what would be the point?”

“So, if you weren’t married to me, would you still be with him?”

“Would I still be with him if I weren’t married to you?”

Again with the repeating of his question.

“Yeah, say there hadn’t been a blizzard and you hadn’t needed Nick to drive you to the hospital… would you still be with him?”

“That’s really hard to say. I mean, Sawyer is my sole focus right now.”

“So, no?”

“I, um, I’m not sure.”

“You said you guys didn’t sleep together.”

“I did?”

“Yeah, you told me that you hadn’t been with anyone while you were pregnant.”

“Oh, well, that’s true.”

She was acting too cagey—things weren’t adding up. It didn’t go unnoticed that she hadn’t answered the question about whether she was still in contact with the guy.

Before he could ask any more questions, she tilted her head. “Where is this coming from?”

“I was just curious.”
