His face remained blank, like he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to react, so she added, “And I’m really excited.”
He broke out into a big smile. “That’s wonderful. Congratulations! You came down to tell Ev?”
“Yeah, but I’m scared he’s going to go all big brother on me and ask a million questions about the father.”
“You’re not with the father?”
“Not anymore.”
She didn’t want to sound like the slut she obviously really was.
“So you’re going to be a single mom,” he observed.
Olivia nodded her head and repeated, “I am going to be a single mom.”
She’d planned on that since Casey broke up with her, but saying it out loud felt overwhelming, and she teared up again.
Steve came around his desk and grabbed her hands as he knelt in front of her.
“You’re going to be amazing at it. And you have an incredible family and friends to support you. I know Evan will be a terrific uncle, and I’m here to help if you need anything.”
She hugged him again. “Thank you.”
“Anytime.”
He stood up straight, and she got to her feet to let him walk her to the door. She wiped her eyes before opening it, and he hugged her around her shoulders again.
“I mean it—you need anything, call me. But you know Evan will always have your back.”
“I know.”
While her twin was her biggest competitor, he was also her biggest supporter. The realization of how lucky she was made her start crying again as she walked out the door.
It was going to be a long eight months if she was to cry over the slightest little thing.
Evan was walking down the hall when he saw her come out of Steven’s office. His face immediately became alarmed when he saw she was crying.
He quickly approached and grabbed her elbow. “Olivia? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she said, smiling through her tears.
“Bullshit. Why are you crying?”
It must have been the pregnancy brain that made her blurt out, “I’m going to have a baby.”
Her brother’s eyes grew wide. “You’re what?”
“I’m pregnant. You’re going to be an uncle.”
She watched him morph into protective older brother right in front of her eyes as he scrubbed his hand across his chin.
“Wh-what? How? Who?”
“Let’s go in your office.”
She knew that, like Steven, Evan needed some guidance from her as to how to feel about this.
For a second she thought about telling him she’d gone to a fertility clinic, but had the foresight to know that lie would potentially bite her in the ass.
