He shook his head with fake pity and got up from his chair. “And here I was, thinking you were smart. I guess what they say about love is true. It turned you into a pussy, Sergey.” He picked my gun from his desk and stroked me across the face with it.

Blood cascaded down my face, the pain a dull ache compared to the rage seething through me.

“You’re just as stupid as your father, Sergey. Isn’t it ironic how you were both destined to meet your end by my hands?” He sighed deeply. “You escaped once. You won’t be that lucky this time.”

I was hurled back to the night my parents died.

Black derby shoes shimmered under the moonlight as they approached. Each step they took was ominous, and they only stopped when they reached my father.

I didn’t see his face, but I heard him say, “Oleg Vadim. All powerful, brutal, and feared. Yet this is how you meet your end.”

“Italian bastard,” my father growled. “Idi k chert.” Go to hell.

Three shots rang in the air, and I slipped out of consciousness.

I’d always known it was Giovanni that night, but I didn’t have any proof. Now, nothing could save him from my wrath.

“You killed them.” My jaw gritted, my fist clenching by my side. I was going to grant him the same level of mercy he gave my father. “You’ll pay, Giovanni. A life for a life.”

“Not if you die first.” He slanted towards me and exhaled his smoke in my face. “Just like when your parents died, you were cursed to lose everyone you love.” He signaled to his men. “Bring his bitch to him. It’s going to be a sad reunion and goodbye.”

Some of his guards flocked out of the hallway, and when they returned, Lilianna was with them.

Moy tsvetok.

Her eyes bulged from crying, her pale skin red from the pain she’d endured. The moment her eyes locked mine, she ran to me and knelt in front of me, crying. “Sergey. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen. I shouldn’t have gone to the bathroom.”

Her hysteric sobs drove into my heart like a barbwire, tearing me into pieces. I hated it when she cried like this. I hated it when she was said.

Cupping her face, I lifted it to meet mine. “It’s not your fault, moy tsvetok.” I pulled her close, and she buried her head between my neck, still crying.

“You shouldn’t have come for me, Sergey. You should have saved yourself instead.”

Rubbing my hand up and down her back, I pressed a kiss to her temple. “Didn’t I tell you,moy tsvetok? We are one. There will be no me without you. If we must die, we die together.”

Though, we weren’t dying today. The sun was high, blazing down its fire. The weather was nice, and it just wasn’t a good day to die.

“Alright. That’s enough reunion.” Lilianna was startled when Giovanni corked his gun behind her. “You’re both interesting to watch, but I have other businesses to take care of. Who dies first between the two of you?”

I pushed Lilianna behind me, shielding her with my body.

“You’re an idiot until the very end,” Giovanni said, pointing his gun at my heart. “Fine. Die first, and maybe I’ll fuck her two or three times before I get rid of her.” His fingers moved to the trigger, but before he could pull it, a shot fired behind him. One of his men dropped to the floor, and like a coward, he cowered for the nearest cover.

Nikolai, Vlad, Maxim, and some of my men busted in, firing their guns at Giovanni’s men. Taking Lilianna by the hand, I led her to a safe corner of the office and returned to join my men.

Vadim threw a gun to me, and I started to shoot. In ten minutes, all of Giovanni’s men littered the floor like flies in their graves. It smelled like death and gunpowder in here.

The air cleared up a bit, and I glanced around for Giovanni. My veins trembled with rage when I couldn’t find him anywhere.

“Any sign of Giovanni?” I asked the room at large, grinding my teeth so hard my jaw hurt.

“No, boss,” each of the men answered as I looked at them. I peered at Nikolai, and with a shrug of his shoulders, he answered, “Nothing.”

Shit. If that old fucker got away, I was going to look for him in every corner of this earth until I found him. “And Giulia?”

Nikolai shook his head. “We haven’t seen her either.”

Those sneaky rats.
