Lily shrugged. “Let me guess, you have someone cook you a full breakfast every morning?”
When he simply bit into the toast, she shook her head. “I have twelve minutes from the moment I walk out of my bedroom until I have to walk out that door.” She pointed at the front door. “Or I will miss my bus. You have someone cook your meals and you walk down the hall.”
“Up the stairs and down the hall,” he corrected.
She sipped her coffee and stared at him. “We are like chalk and cheese.”
“That doesn’t change anything,” Aidan said, mirroring her with his own mug.
Her phone beeped.
It was her mom checking she was okay. She replied, letting her know Aidan was with her. Not that she normally kept her mom up to date with her love life, but it would calm her to know she wasn’t alone.
“Do you want to go over there?” Aidan said. “I’m going to rent a car, so wherever you need to go, I can take you.”
Lily felt her barriers melt. She walked around the counter and sat next to him on the stool. “You are amazing, you know that? I wish my dad would have met you.”
Tears fell down her cheeks. For the seventh time since she woke. Aidan was taking them in his stride and honestly, Lily wasn’t able to stop them. Little things kept reminding her of her dad.
The doorstop he’d bought her to stop it slamming closed. The Chicago Bulls keyring he’d surprised her with when she was younger. Which was almost unrecognizable, but she kept it because she loved it so much.
Just stuff.
Memories.
“Me too,” he said, taking her hand and squeezing.
“I just want to rest today. Unless Mom needs me. Is that okay, or do you have things to do?” Lily asked.
“I have some work to do, so I’ll go hire the car, grab my laptop, and then come back,” Aidan said.
Lily nodded, noticing he didn’t ask, simply told her. Some women might not like that, but she found his assertiveness very sexy.
Even if she only got to enjoy it for a little while longer.
“Back soon, peaches.” Aidan kissed her goodbye and closed the door behind him.
His absence hit her immediately as she stood in the middle of the room and dropped her face into her hands.
How on earth was she going to let him go?
