“Same here,” she giggled, with something that sounded akin to the sound of a little girl. I almost rolled my eyes, but instead, I sighed, and she soon turned away and went into her room while I faced him.

Seeing him so impeccably dressed, I was suddenly self-conscious. I was in oversized pajama pants and a huge T-shirt from last night. I hadn’t exactly considered what I would wear to bed. I had simply been exhausted and panicked, and then somehow, halfway through the night, sleep had come to me.

“Come in, please,” I said and headed back to the kitchen.

“Would you like something to drink?” I asked as he came over to the counter.

I looked around my house, wondering how he saw it through his own eyes until I recalled that he had been here himself not too long ago. In short, he had taken me against the wall I was now staring at, and even though I didn't think that was the time exactly I had found myself in my current mess, it was something to think about.

“I already had coffee at the office,” he said and took his seat on the stool across from me.

“Alright,” I said and then turned to stare at him from across the counter. “Something to eat then... fruits... pancakes?”

“You're not surprised to see me here?” he asked, and I smiled.

“I am, but I know whatever reason you're here, it must be serious. And I also know that given the time, you most definitely haven't eaten, so it wouldn't be bad to talk as you eat.”

He smiled at this, and then his gaze softened on me.

“Are you alright? The message was that you skipped the meeting because you aren't feeling well?”

“Yeah,” I replied. “I felt a bit... nauseous and just feverish. I think I had food poisoning or something. Plus, things have become quite hectic with the department and all and I really needed the day off.”

His gaze went to the closed door by the side.

“Sure it has nothing to do with the fact that your friend is in town?” he asked, and I smiled.

“'Maybe.”

“It has absolutely nothing to do with what we talked about yesterday?” he asked, and I was somewhat taken aback.

“I hadn't even thought about it."

"Oh," I said and frowned. "Is that why you're here? You're here to take it back."

He smiled, and I felt a bit more comfortable enough to joke with him about it.

"It better not be the case."

"It isn't," he said, and I nodded. Then he watched me again.

"You don't want me to take it back?"

"Absolutely not."

"So, you're going to accept?"

"Of course I am," I said, and despite the apprehension I saw on his face, mine was accompanied by a sinking feeling because there was no way now that he was going to accept that I was not just agreeing to this because of the baby. I wished more than anything that I had told him just how glad I was by what he was proposing yesterday that I had accepted it on the spot.

I sighed then and pushed my worries away. There was truly no point in having them because they weren't going to solve anything. I wanted to go even closer to him, but I hesitated.

"Is that why you came over?" I asked. "You were worried that I'd say no."

"No," he said, and my heart deflated again. Maybe I was getting too ahead of myself.

"I came over because I got fired today."

The moment the words left his mouth, my entire senses screeched to a halt.
