"I need it," I said, and she nodded.

"I know."

"Anything I can do to help?"

"No," I replied. "There's a farmers market though; I've been meaning to visit. They're usually only open on Saturdays, but today is Friday, so maybe we might find something. Maybe we'll run into a flea market on the way."

"That sounds fantastic," she said. "I was actually going to go to a cafe for breakfast and have it outside, just like in Paris."

"This is not Paris," I said, and she nodded.

"Trust me, I know. But since you're not going to work, would you like to join me?"

"Of course," I said, and she nodded. "Though don't eat all of that, or you won't have any space for the café.”

I was about to agree to this, but then I remembered that yes, indeed, I might not have the space for more, but I would most definitely need it. I sighed and put the jar away.

She picked up her cup to head over to the stool on the opposite side, but just as she set it down, there was a knock on the door.

"Oh?" she said as she looked behind. "Are you expecting someone?"

"No," I replied as I stared at it, but I couldn't help my nerves. "Maybe it's the building maintenance but they would have called first," I said calmly as I finished the rest of my oats. She gave me a peculiar look, and then she headed over to the door.

I wanted to head over to my room because I truly wasn't ready for whatever the day had in store for me. In fact, I wanted to hide. But I waited, at least to see what the day had for me because it truly might not end up being too bad.

She looked through the peephole, and then she pulled away. She looked through it again, and this time, as she turned around to look at me, her eyes were wide.

"What?" I asked.

"Were you expecting Kane?” she asked, and my heart dropped into my stomach.

"Expecting who?"

"You know who,” she said, and the knock came again. This time, however, it was brief.

I immediately turned around and began to head to my room.

"Lena," she called, and I stopped in my tracks. Then I turned around and nodded.

After giving me a look, she opened the door, and there he was. The man I hadn't been able to get out of my mind for even a single second since last night. He looked at my friend and then looked at me before looking at her once again.

"Is this a bad time?" he asked, and I shook my head.

"No, it's not."

Diana looked back at me, and then she smiled as she got out of the way and invited him in.

"Would you like something to drink?" she asked. I'm Diana, by the way."

There was, however, no recognition in his eyes since I hadn't ever mentioned her. I hadn't ever mentioned anyone because we'd never really sat down to talk about our personal lives beyond the connection that we held with our fathers. And that was the whole point of my dilemma and hesitation with him. However, as I stared at him—how handsome he was and how strong I knew his character was—and how I felt, it was so difficult for me to lament the fact that I was now aware that I was pregnant with his child. He was a perfect specimen of a man, and I knew my heart was already taken with him. We just had to remove the mental and emotional roadblocks we had both put in our own way so that we could become completely open to each other. If we were ever able to do this, I could imagine how it all would be. I could breathe, and for the first time, we could give each other permission to feel what we already felt for each other. At least, what I knew I already felt for him.

I stepped forward for the first time and introduced her.

“This is my best friend... from LA.”

He looked at her and then at me, and then he nodded. He smiled and held out his hand once again, and she took it excitedly.

“Hello, Diana. I'm Kane. It's a pleasure to meet you.”
