"That's because you haven't tried any other way," I said, pressing my forehead to his. "And that really is something you should consider. At least try it, see if it works."

My heart rate was erratic. He swallowed audibly. I wanted to help him, but I didn’t want to push. Nobody liked a bossy know-it-all.

He kissed down my arm again until he reached my hand and said, "I've always had this insane urge to work, you know? Like being inside that lab was the only time I felt at ease. Happy, even. That's changed lately." He held my hand. "Since I started spending time with you." He lifted his head, making eye contact. "Fuck, you're all I need," he said, standing up straighter and pulling me close to him.

My heart slid back into its place, but I was still feeling a bit uneasy.

He kissed my forehead. I felt in his body language that he was still tense.

There was a loud knock at the door.

"Can I come in?" The voice belonged to one of his lead scientists, but I couldn't remember for the life of me who it was.

"Sure," Colton said.

The second I stepped away from him, the door opened.

"Hey, Zoey. I thought I heard someone inside. Sorry to interrupt. Listen, Colton, can you come down to the lab? We're trying to do something, and we need your help."

"Sure, I'll come right away."

"Good," the guy said, then darted out the door, closing it behind him.

Colton took my hand, kissing it and squeezing my fingers. "We'll talk later, okay?"

I took another deep breath and nodded.

I was afraid he was considering what Browning said about cutting distractions out of his life.

And, well... the only distraction was... me.

The rest of the weekwas insane. I spent more time in the lab than in the last month combined. At the same time, my brothers and half brothers reached a decision—they agreed to buy out Father. But we needed to speak to our grandparents first.
