“Look, I'm not sure what all of you are used to—” I began.

"That's because you zoned out for like two years," Spencer said, “but go on.”

"But I’m not going to share any details with anyone," I informed them.

"You don’t have to share anything," Grandmother said.

I stared at her. "Now you're taking my side?"

"Honey, when I start a project, all I want is to give you a push. You have to work things out for yourself"—she glanced at Spencer—"without anyone giving him a hard time."

My grandmother operated in mysterious ways, but thankfully the conversation moved away from me.

But the truth was that Zoey was at the center of my mind. Even though we'd been up the whole night talking, I wasn't nearly done with all the questions I had for her. I had a burning desire to know every detail about her life, abouther. We hadn't spoken about the future or the office situation because, honestly, that went against everything I stood for. I had to fight every instinct, but there was no going back now.

Zoey was mine.

Chapter Fourteen

Zoey

On Monday morning,I was a bit jittery when I went into the office. I was still tired even though I’d slept in yesterday. But that wasn't the only reason I was on edge. I wasn't sure how I'd react when I saw Colton. The night we'd spent together was amazing, but I had no clue what that meant for us. Still, work was work, so I sat at my desk, lit a lavender-scented candle, and opened my inbox, knocking out the first few emails.

By lunchtime, I was starting to get a bit suspicious. I hadn't heard Colton's voice at all. So while I went to get myself a coffee, I stopped by Darla’s desk. His calendar showed he was in a meeting all day, but I hadn’t heard him arrive.

"Hey, is Colton in a meeting?" I asked.

"Yes, but not at the office. He's at one of our producers.'"

"Oh. All right."

"He’s not coming to the office the whole week."

My stomach bottomed out in disappointment. I wouldn't see him at all this week? I couldn't believe the wave of sadness that just rolled over me. I went back to my desk, pouting as I focused on my inbox again.

My stomach somersaulted when I saw an email from Colton. The subject line saidUrgent, but the body only saidCheck your messages. But I had my phone right next to me.
