“I’ll check back on you in half an hour to ensure you got in the shower, okay? Use the cool water. Deep breaths. You’ll be fine.”

“Thank you, Braxl.”

I heard my quarters door swoosh open.

“You’re welcome, Jasmine.”

He used my name…I shimmied into the blankets deeper. “Happiest day of my life…” I murmured as I relaxed into the ecstasy, allowing myself at least a few moments before I would try to traverse the waves of my room to get to the shower.

“The mission…” I murmured, but then the rainbows took over and I couldn’t make sense of any more words, just riding the waves and pleasure into the depths of blissful sleep.

Braxl

Jasmine still hadn’t hit the shower when I went back to check on her. I couldn’t help but feel a bit smug about the impression I’d made. Sure, I knew a good chunk of it was thanks to the venom. I’d been careful not to give her too much. I’d done some research on what it did to humans and was surprised to find out they used it as a party drug. That irked me, knowing that some Krafina from Prexis Prime were stooping that low to make money off Earth.

But on the bright side, it reassured me that it would be safe for us to explore it together. We could take it slow, see how much she could handle. And it seemed like she was into it, which meant we had plenty of time to figure things out.

I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of tasting her again.

After getting Jasmine into the shower, I stayed with her until she could actually hold a conversation. I whipped up some strong tea and left to prepare for the wedding.

Now, I was standing in our big supply hall, mostly cleared out for the ceremony. I looked out at the guests, all dressed in their best traditional outfits, waving and enjoying themselves. The hall was adorned with soft lanterns and draped with flowers over the crates.

Another smile crept onto my face. I didn’t see Jasmine as any sort of ‘plight’ anymore. Today might not be the absolute happiest day of our lives, but I was more than willing to work towards finding more and more happiness together in the years to come.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on why my perspective had shifted. There was just something about that human woman that fascinated me. Maybe it was how she stood her ground before my father. Maybe it was the surprise element with her grit and spontaneity. Or perhaps it was that gorgeous body and those amazing lips. Whatever it was, I was eager to learn more about her.

Of course, there was the matter of Vishin’s blaster that I had found in her quarters…

My smile stole away at the thought.

That was definitely something I wouldneedto learn about her. Sooner than later.

Granted, I wasn’t entirely sure it was Vishin’s, but it was a Krafina Commander’s blaster. And it wasn’t one of my spares. There was no explanation for how it was hidden in the drawer underneath her bed other than that she had killed him or found him in a vulnerable state that allowed her to steal it.

Why hadn’t I said anything to anyone? I should call off the wedding, throw her in the brig, and demand an explanation.

Cheers and greeting roars rose as my beastly father entered the hall and took his seat in the front row. I nodded toward him as he looked at me. The array of medals, many of which he had invented and bestowed on himself, looked ridiculous in the sparkling lights of the hall.

My father. That was an ample reason to not let anyone know about the blaster. He wouldn’t even allow an investigation. Just cut off her head and space her.

I wanted to know more.

If the rumors of the Resistance on Earth were true, was it possible that Jasmine was their agent? What was her plan?

No matter how much I was growing to admire Jasmine, it honestly felt like giving humans too much credit to think they had planted an agent as my bride to spell any type of doom for Prexis Prime.

If anything, it made sense for Jasmine to steal the blaster, wherever she had found it. She was much weaker than my crew and any of the other crews. She was marrying into a species that was racist against her own.

Could it be just for protection?

Could she be lying with the way she moved, the way she touched me, the way she flirted?

I shook my head at the thought, then smiled on cue as another guest waved my way.

I just couldn’t believe that it was all a lie. There was something between us. I could feel it…
