“Debriefing. Absolutely. I would love that, honestly.”

“Good. I was hoping you’d be amicable. And there’s one other thing.”

“Tell me. No matter what you say, we’ll figure it out together. I can promise you that.”

“I don’t think I can have any more scenes at The Temple.”

“Can you explain that? Did someone make you uncomfortable?”

“Walking out of that room and through all the people at the club was a little too difficult for me. It is similar to an experience I had in my younger days. One that isn’t positive.”

“I am sorry I put you in that position.”

“You didn’t. I didn’t know it would be an issue for me until it happened.”

“How can we make it better?”

“Ruth suggested I ask if you’d be willing to host.”

“You want to scene at my house?”

“If that isn’t okay, I completely understand. I don’t mean to press —”

“Adah, calm down. It’s okay. I would love to do that. But only if you feel comfortable.”

“I do feel comfortable. Or, at least, mostly. Ruth suggested we could work out ways to make me feel more safe. If you’re willing.”

“Name it, love.”

“If we could give Ruth and Levi your address. Just so that if something happens, they know where I am. That would make me feel more safe. It helps that Ruth and Levi trust you so much. I just… I want to know that I can leave at any time, and that someone else knows where I am.”

“That’s not even a question, love. Consider it done. Safety is of the utmost importance. I’m happy to oblige.”

“Good. I’d like that.”

“So that means you do want to scene again?”

“Are you kidding me?” My brow arched, giving him a wry look.

“Nope.”

“Don’t be daft, Joel. You know I want to.”

“Tell me anyway.” He just smiled, patient and implacable.

“Your ego doesn’t need boosting.”

“Pretend it does. Stroke my ego to full erection, love.”

I smacked his arm. “Ew! That’s vile, Joel.”

“You love it.” That smile was becoming decidedly more sinister.

“You wish.”

“All joking aside, I’m glad you want to scene again. I do as well.”

“I’m excited.” I could feel that excitement welling up inside me, but his next words squashed it right back down again.
