“Then what is it like, Harry? I’ve done absolutely nothing to insinuate that I want anything remotely close to that, I’m married to your brother in case you’ve forgotten!” I shout, holding my hand up and pointing at the rings.
“You and I both know that don’t mean shit.”
My head spins.
“You and Reed would never have been married if it wasn’t for that stupid fucking contract!” He continues.
“Yes we would.” I defy him, wanting to blank out the nonsense he is spilling.
“Indie, you and Reed were together because of Willow, for money, for whatever gain you got out of it. But without Willow, you have nothing.”
I wipe away at my tears. “We love each other,” my voice comes out barely as a whisper.
He lets out a frustrated groan and rubs his face.
“Why can’t you see it?” He shakes his head repeatedly.
“See what?” I question, my nose completely blocked and my voice now nasally.
He pauses and shakes his head again.
“It doesn’t matter.” He puts his hands in his pockets and lowers his head.
My anger begins to cease and I wrap my arms around myself at the chilly breeze.
“At least let me walk you home.” He counteracts, his voice now quiet and compassionate.
“Fine.” I say.
We stride alongside each other for the rest of the way, nearing the gate of the house when he stops again.
I turn to him, “What now?”
My head drops sideways as I peer at him through my lashes that are now clumped together from the crying.
“If it’s him you’re choosing, there are some things you should know,” he begins.
“It’s about Allie.” He pleads.
I shake my head.
“Keep it to yourself, Harry. I don’t want to hear it,” and I turn away from him, disappearing through the gates and into the house.
Chapter 26
Reed
I stand outside of the building for a long time before I figure out how to move my feet again. The strangling feeling wraps itself around my neck, knowing that the second I step foot inside, that’s it. I must confront my demons head on, no backing down, no second chances. The devil doesn’t offer his mercy, just pain and suffering.
I grip the handle shakily and press downwards, the heavy door lifting as I hear chatter in the distance. I almost decide against it, get in my car and drive back home. But I’m confronted with the reasoning behind why I’m here in the first place.
“Reed! Didn’t think I’d be seeing you so soon.” Devon claps a hand on my back and looks at my hand still firmly gripped on the handle.
He notices I haven’t yet moved an inch and a level of understanding washes over him.
“I get it, stepping inside of there is admitting your faults, confronting your failures.” It’s like he drew the thoughts directly from within me.
“But, that’s what sponsors are for.” He reaches a hand towards me, waiting patiently.
