“Weird,” she comments and huffs. “I still don’t get why I’d date two people. Sounds weird as hell.”

“I don’t think it’s weird,” Josephine admits with a small smile. She reaches out to stroke Xandra’s cheeks. “Maybe you still had feelings for Wyatt but started to fall for Armani and didn’t want to choose between them.”

“So, I dated both of them,” she sums up and looks at her father. “Papa? Aren’t you against that?”

He shrugs. “From the photos on your phone that you showed us a few minutes ago, it seemed you were happy, Sweetheart,” he reveals. “It feels odd and maybe upsetting to you because of these current circumstances, but I believe you loved him as much as you love Armani.”

“Sofiya, my dear,” Josephine whispers. “Just give him a chance. You saw how heartbroken he was. He’s been at the hospital since we arrived, and that’s after he spent the entire night helping the investigators. It’s our fault that he’s not a full-time bodyguard. He was originally assigned to protect you.”

“Protect me,” she mutters. “So, he’s the little boy.”

“He is,” she admits. “You don’t remember much from that, do you?”

“Not really.”

“We’ll explain it a little later,” her father emphasizes. “Chief DeCosta, can we speak outside? It’s regarding the family dinner coming up.”

“Sure.”

They head our way, but Xandra’s attention moves to her mother.

“Family dinner?”

“Yes.” Josephine gives a nervous smile. “It’s supposed to be tomorrow night, but we were going to cancel it.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re not well, my dear.”

“I can come, can’t I?” she ponders. “The doctor said I can still walk and stuff. Can’t we enjoy dinner together?”

“Well…” She looks apprehensive and peers over at Officer Melody for her opinion.

“If you wish to do your family get-together, it’s fine. The investigation will still be on the way, and we’d gladly provide additional security. It could be good for Kenzie versus being cooped up in a room. Plus, it’ll only be close acquaintances.”

“Yes,” Josephine answers.

“And not so loud music?”

“It’ll be classical music, orchestrated.”

“Then it should be okay, but I’d get the Doc’s approval just in case,” she encourages and looks to Kenzie.

“If we need more of a statement from you, we’ll be back, but this is more than enough. We’ll aim to get a hypnotist with enough experience here in Canada by the end of the week, if not earlier. Until then, just relax and rest up.”

“Is Katherine okay?” her question surprises Officer Melody before she smiles.

“She’s recovering and has a good support system. Should I tell her you’re worried about her?”

“Yes, please,” she urges. “She’s important to me, you know. Our friendship hasn’t been long, but she’s someone I see can be a really good best friend.”

“I’m sure she feels the same about you, Kenzie,” Officer Melody agrees before reaching over to squeeze Kenzie’s hand. “You’re a strong, loving person, Kenzie. I’m glad you’re alright.”

“Thank you.”

She takes her lead to leave, which is Armani’s opportunity to tug me into the room.

I notice how Kenzie’s eyes acknowledge Armani almost instantly, the love overflowing those blue eyes.
