“You’re crazier, bitch!” I hiss. “Why would you go to save Muffin? You could have died if Armani didn’t come here.”
“She’s your… family.”
We’re about to move but still at her breathy words.
“Can’t let your family die. So… I managed to break down the door and get her, but… it was hard to find my way out. Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize,” Armani mutters as his eyes seek mine. “You can run?”
I nod.
“Mikayla is still in the building, though,” I confess.
Oscar frowns and looks around before he meets my worried gaze.
“Maddox?”
“Went inside,” I breathe.
“He’ll get her.” There’s not a hint of doubt. “Let’s not become a burden.”
I nod and am surprised when he offers me his hand.
“Don’t let go until we’re safe.”
“Okay,” I whisper and hold his hand far too tight.
“Kenzie.” He looks forward before he prepares to run. “Thanks for coming in to save me.”
“Always,” I whisper and let my tears fall before we race toward the exit.
Cries of shock and relief ignite at the sight of us as we run down the stairs toward Leo, Coach Cyrus, Mr. Champion, and the rest of the team.
I also realize the police have arrived.
Fucking hell.
“Katherine!” Leo screams as the firefighters finally let him go so he can take the few sprinting strides to reach us as we come to a slow stop. “Please tell me she’s alive.”
“Stop panicking, stupid,” she groans and barely opens her eyes as Leo has her in his arms in seconds. “Just dizzy and a bit tired.”
“Fuck, Kathy, you’re always sacrificing yourself for others!” he screams and hugs her so tightly.
“Yeah, yeah.” She doesn’t sound mad about it. “Sorry, Leo.”
“Meow!” Muffin says in triumph, making our group sigh in relief, knowing our kitten and purpose of going into the flames was worth it.
Only Mikayla left.
I flinch at the sudden pain in my arm that has me hissing in dismay.
“You’re under arrest for assaulting a firefighter!” The same firefighter has me in a death grip that makes it feel like my whole bicep will explode.
“Fuck. Let go. You’re hurting me,” I hiss.
“Hey! Let go of her,” Mitchel growls.
“That’s fucking abuse. She did nothing wrong,” Axel snaps.
