“Did Mikayla get in?” I can’t be fully happy unless I know my Ride-And-Die bitch got in, too. There were no doubts there, but I wanted to hear the truth.
“Yup,” Coach Cyrus says with a proud smile. “Looks like you’re both going to have internships in Strattonville. Who knows? Maybe you’ll get thrown onto one of the new hockey teams.”
“Hockey teams?” I can’t even imagine such an opportunity.
“I’ll explain it all over dinner,” he encourages. Breaking the hug, he wipes away my tears. “Now, go get all glamorous looking so you can go hug your bestie and squeal like the crazy girls you are.”
I roll my eyes.
“We aren’t crazy.”
“My bad,” he apologizes. “You’re both psychos when playing Taylor Swift in the background.”
“O.M.G! We have to play Taylor Swift to commemorate this moment! MICKEY!! COME HERE SO WE CAN KAROKE AND UBER EATS THE NIGHT AWAY!”
“Wyatt was right,” Coach Cyrus groans as he shakes his head. “Told me to mention Taylor, and you’d go nuts.”
“Tell him to shut his hole and focus on his new girl.”
That makes Coach Cyrus laugh.
“Who told you he had a new girl?”
“No one.”
Fuck. Does he actually have a new girl?
The idea makes my stomach clench.
“Then?”
“He wouldn’t remain single this entire time, Coach,” I huff and stand up.
God, who am I kidding? I’d wish he was so we could try again. Would we even get far? I’m sure the only thing we both miss is the sex.
Composing myself with a few breaths, I look back at the coach with his intrigued expression.
“There are so many fish in the sea. I’m sure he found a cute, intelligent girl, who’s probably a successful doctor, rich, and drives those rich ass cars that are the new trend.”
“You mean Teslas?”
“Yeah, that fancy shit,” I brush off and look away. “We’re just on the other spectrum of the scale of life. He shouldn’t settle for someone like me. The sky’s really the limit for Dr. Cyrus, Jr. You should remind him of that.” I begin to walk away, deciding to skip so I can make a dramatic entrance in tackling Mikayla.
“A shame his eyes are still on the one he’s never stopped loving.”
I pretend not to hear every single word of his quiet confession.
CHAMELEON AUNTIE AND THE KING OF MY PAST
~MACKENZIE~
“Hello, Auntie,” I greet after I check up on the Uber order of food, I put in thanks to Coach Cyrus’ approval to splurge with his credit card. Honestly, the man still spoils me.
Even though I broke his son’s heart.
I guess it was a mutual agreement when you think about it, but the fact he still shows compassion to me in all areas is much appreciated.
I know a few distant relatives enjoy rubbing in the fact that Mikayla was loved by everyone, and I was the “side-chick friend” who gets sympathy points, but I never felt that way with Coach Cyrus.
