I don’t like the way he says those words, leaving me to arch an eyebrow as I try to click one and two together.
“He’s still tracking her?”
“Stalking,” Oliver corrects. “Yes.”
“What does he want from her?”
“I wish I was a mind reader, Bro. Sadly, I’m not.”
“What should I do?” I grumble. “You know I can’t carry on property.”
“You can’t,” he assures me. “But I can.”
He flaunts his holster with a flicking movement of his black suit coat.
“Just keep your eyes on your queen,” he encourages. “I’d suggest if you’re bringing Cyrus Jr. into this, you catch him up with our investigation. He’d be a good ally to have on our side.”
“And Kenzie? I can’t tell her?”
“Not yet.” Oliver shakes his head. “She needs to keep acting her part, which is being herself. If she starts showing signs of suspicion, you know Fernandez won’t hesitate to pull that trigger.”
The mere idea of Kenzie getting hurt makes my blood boil.
“Remember,” Oliver begins as his hand grips my chin, forcing me to look into his eyes and not at the floor in worry. “Who are we?”
“Salvatores.”
“When someone wants to steal what’s ours?”
“We bite back.”
“By any means necessary, yes?”
“Yes.”
“Good.” He lets go and gently taps my left cheek. “Enjoy your hockey and love shenanigans and leave the more complicated shit to your big brother.”
“Oliver…” The day I get to repay him.
“I promised you we’d get our happy endings, no matter how cruel the world is to us, yes?” he whispers.
“Yes.”
“I never break my promises as a Salvatore, Oscar. Always remember that.” He reaches for the door handle and opens the door enough so I can leave. “Keep in touch. I’ll make a few calls.”
I bob my head and exit the room. Before the door closes, I hear his final words.
“Father is looking forward to seeing you play.”
With the shut of the door, I’m left to stare at the grey surface as his words make my mind go wild.
“There you are.”
I look over my shoulder to see Kenzie walking my way.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Do you want the guys to suffer doing push ups forever?”
When she reaches me, she moves around so she’s facing me. Despite the height difference, she stands there with that pouty mouth of hers and those defiant blue eyes.
