“Isaac,” he whispers.
I stop to look back at him.
“You can just call me Isaac, Maddox,” he declares, then quietly adds, “It doesn’t matter what ring you get her. Expensive or not, Mikayla will cherish it forever.”
“Is that permission?” I quietly wonder.
He shrugs. “If Coach Cyrus is down for it, sure.”
I chuckle. “Best go ask him then.”
“Not with my car,” he grunts and takes the key from me before I can escape with it. “Ask him on the ride back. Let’s go. I’m sure Mikayla can’t wait to see you.”
“Why do I feel like you’re saying that so when I arrive back, I can start doing drills in the garage?”
“Glad you remember the routine in my house,” he announces, but surprisingly walks beside me and pats my shoulder. “Thank you for never giving up on the love you had for my little girl, Maddox. Your dad would have been just as proud as I am.”
My smile can’t be big enough.
“I know.”
As long as I never lose sight of the light ahead of me, I’ll remain on the path that leads me to a future filled with happiness.

“We’re almost at the height for the jump! Make sure you properly put your parachutes on. Since you both are experienced, there’s no need to go through the procedures again, yes?”
“I’m good,” I mutter, already annoyed by this douche standing further to my left.
“Yup.”
This was supposed to be a solo skydive for me. I strictly emphasized it before leaving the house this morning, but they had a last-minute entry and couldn’t deny them.
I just have all the bad luck. Why am I not surprised?
My life was coming to an end, it seemed.
I got the text early this morning that the court date was expedited to tomorrow for my hearing. Father had already been taken in for multiple counts of fraud, money laundering, manipulation of evidence, and oddly enough, attempted murder.
All our accounts had been frozen, and I wouldn’t be surprised if our possessions were next to be seized. I already got the call before arriving here that I’ve been let go from the Saskatchewan Pincers.
My replacement?
My sweet little twin brother.
Jamie Winchester.
The new captain of the Saskatchewan Pincers.
The flight up gave me a chance to watch the conference, which I downloaded before my departure from the house. We’re not allowed to have phones up here, but fuck it. I was still in airplane mode, so I didn’t give a shit about whatever rules were required of me.
Watching the conference and listening to what had been said destroyed any brink of hope I had in redemption.
In securing my place back in the spotlight.
I fucked up.
