“Hot damn,” Mack whistles as she takes me in from head to toe. “Who are you trying to reel in tonight? In fact, which one of the guys pissed you off?”
“Now, why would you think someone pissed me off?” I ask with a wide grin. “And look who’s talking, Smoke BBQ McHottie. Teal looks outstanding on you.”
“Just as revenge red looks on you,” she replies with a wink and hugs me the moment I reach her.
I’m really thankful I was able to find this dress last minute after being invited to the fundraiser ball. It’s a long ruched gown with a mermaid train. Adding the V strapless corset vibe, I get to show my slightly muscled arms and perfect breasts that are lifted by this amazing sticky bra.
My hair’s down in its signature curls but laid out seamlessly at my hairline so my hair could tuck behind my ears and show the dangling earrings of ruby red and gold.
“Now spill. Who ground your gears for you to look so smoking hot? Did one of the guys break one of your sentimental belongings during the move?”
“Hah, no,” I laugh. “I actually was able to move everything but my jewelry box. I thought I’d packed it, but I remembered putting it under my mattress.”
“Should I even ask why you’re acting like every traditional mother who puts their child’s birth certificate under the mattress for safekeeping?” she questions. “Which includes my aunt because she’s sassy and cool like that.”
“It’s important to me, and I didn’t know whether the dorms were secure, you know? At least putting it under the mattress isn’t something a thief would venture to first. They always aim for vanities, dressers, and nightstands. They made a documentary on it. It’s scientifically proven.”
“I’m glad you did your research,” Mack laughs. “Now, why are you dressed to kill?”
“In all honesty, I wanted to put on a bit of a show and remind social media I’m not just your boring nurse who just wears scrubs and my team’s jerseys all day.”
Social media the last few weeks has been wild. I’m glad I’m not involved in this generation where social media seems to run everything. To the new generations, who needs the news channels? You can just go on TikTok and find it all by typing the simple keywords or hop over to Twitter, where you’ll get the uncensored version of the event.
Despite it being potentially triggering.
In my case, there was an odd hate campaign started by a group who was making it their life purpose to ruin me in any way, from commenting on my attire to my hair, down to even my makeup and non-existent skin care.
It’s as if I’m the perfect science experiment where I can be picked apart by every flaw and be mocked by the masses.
Normally, these things wouldn’t bother me, but it’s getting to the point that wherever I’m seen, my pictures would be taken, and the floodgates of criticism would flow in.
She’s wearing sweats.
No makeup, c’mon.
Her skin is patchy and pale.
Her hair dye is fading, and she can’t afford to touch it up.
How can Maddox date such a plain Jane Doe?
The list goes on as comments go wild on these platforms that only care about clicks and views.
It’s exactly why it shouldn’t get to me, but with tonight’s fundraiser ball, I wanted to give them something to talk about.
Which is why I dressed up as if I’m about to walk down the red carpet.
I was also delivering the element of surprise with my appearance. None of the nurses told their teams they would be attending tonight.
Doctor Bridgett and Doctor Francisco wanted things to be on the down low until the actual event to keep it “professional.”
I’d overheard Dr. Francisco wanted to attend because a few board members and sponsors of the NHL league would be present. He was doing anything to make an effort and be “visible,” so he could secure a future position with an already established team.
It was kinda crazy how desperate he was to look good in the eyes of these members when his performance and ability to the Saskatchewan Pincers would be the priority versus his ‘presence’ at events, but if it left him busy and not bothering us, I couldn’t care less.
Clearly, Caren with a C was on a similar mission because she was just as “hyped” to attend and be seen by those who were vitally important in changing her life by connecting the dots to a secure contract as a team nurse.
I’m honestly here to snatch some edges with my flawless look, get a few pictures with the boys, eat good appetizers, and get all the glasses of wine I can handle before I’m too tipsy to get a ride home.
