Gothic nurse, Dimitri, lets go of the mom and drops to the ground. He’s only an inch from the little girl’s head, blood dripping down the side of her face as though she smashed her temple into the glass.
Mikayla is up and now facing the little girl’s body vertically. She drops down, hands pressed onto her little chest once more before she barks orders.
“Who called 911?!”
“M-Me!!” I hear a woman from afar.
A mere glance confirms it’s an older woman with platinum blonde hair. She’s holding the phone, and it’s on speaker with who I’ll assume is a 911 operator.
“Come here now!”
The woman races to reach Mikayla and Dimitri, the two of them sharing a look before they nod and begin compressions. Dimitri is counting while Mikayla is focused on pressing against the child’s chest.
I don’t get why they’re working so hard.
She’s dead.
It’s been more than an hour.
She had to have stopped breathing a little after the crash.
Her face is so blue. Or is that purple?
All of this is pointless.
Yet, my girl keeps trying.
Even with beads of sweat beginning to trail down the sides of her face while she’s breathless.
“This is the 911 Operator. Can you let me know the current status of the situation?”
“Car accident on 15th, just before the hill. Mother and child. Mother in distress. Child, Jessica Hamilton. Nine years old. Bleeding from the left temple, wounds across the body from shattered glass. She already has a heart condition. Could be ignited due to impact and shock. Unresponsive.”
Unresponsive.
She had a heart condition.
We can blame that.
Perfect.
I can get out of this.
“Are you a medical profession?” The operator asks.
“Yes!!” Mikayla practically heaves as she pauses in compression. I assume she’s tired as fuck, because that looks absolutely draining, but then Dimitri is lowering his lips to the girl’s blue ones, blowing streams of air.
It seems ridiculous to me.
Can’t they see she’s dead?
“Mikayla Cross Johnson, Registered Nurse with Dimitri Maxwell Champion, also a Registered Nurse. We’re conducting CPR as I speak. She needs to be airlifted to the hospital. The closest one is Clemency Gardens Hospital.”
Clemency Gardens.
Where her mother passed away.
Why would she want to go there?
