Shade and Going-gray turned their heads and walked away.
“Rest in peace, wolf, but never him,” I said in farewell.
Then I summoned the scythe, the signature weapon of Death that I’d now inherited, and took off the alpha’s head, ending the wolf’s suffering.
War was brutal. But death was eternal.
The wolf was free now.
CHAPTER 25
Six months later
It took Shade, Danielle, and Paris five days to pass through three leylines to get to Nightfall Castle inthe Swiss Confederation, Marlowe’s and my new home.
We gathered in the elegant living room of the Queen’s Suite. Yep, I got my own suite, though I spent almost every night in Marlowe’s bed in the King’s Suite. I only slept in the Queen’s Suite when I had a fight with him, but then he’d sneak into my room, get under the sheet, and snuggle against me, murmuring half-hearted apologies while pointing out my faults as well.
And then we’d have fierce makeup sex. It always ended up like that. He was very lucky that I would put up with him. I didn’t hold back by telling him that no one else would take him, especially when he sneered at me.
My friends and I were enjoying a second breakfast and morning tea. These shifters consumed food like locusts. They’d eat Marlowe and me out of house and home if they kept at it.
“So, this is where you hole up these days, Catnip,” Shade said as he finished the last piece of a kidney pie and went after a plate of pigs in blankets.
“I don’t hole up and I don’t hide, Canary,” I said, scooping up a big portion of spinach artichoke dip with a tortilla chip before Paris had a chance to dig into the same bowl.
If I didn’t act fast, the dip would be gone along with the other delicious dips. Paris had finished half of them already! Never underestimate a female werewolf, since they could eat more than a male werewolf and were twice as vicious.
“Everyone knows where I am,” I continued. “They’re welcome to come at me and see how they like surprises.”
“That’d be a nasty surprise.” Danielle sipped her tea.
Paris nodded gingerly. “They won’t be foolish enough to come at you.” I eyed her warily. But at least she paused in devouring the dips. “You killed the horseman of war! Who else could do that?”
“Well, that might be true, but you know people have short memories.” I voiced my jaded attitude. “They’ll forget how I beat War in a couple of years. That’s why history always repeats itself. That’s why peace won’t last. You guys won’t come after me, but other ambitious supernaturals and humans will always seek to conquer the world or find a common enemy they can beat the shit out of. Humanity is overrated, and powerful men always want more power. They aren’t happy unless they are creating conflict to display how big their cocks are. Marlowe and I might be the only ones standing in their way.”
I’d stopped War from plaguing Earth, yet I wouldn’t go down in the history books as a hero. On the contrary, I was labeled as a villain. Humans and supernaturals were terrified of Death’s daughter. The core hunter organizations, like the Defenders, Guardians, and Watchers, had recruited even more vigilantes who vowed to take me down one day.
“You know we’ll always come to your aid if any force dares to bring war to your door, right?” Danielle said, attacking a gourmet pizza. I should have dragged the last piece onto my plate before she took it.
Shade was the new Alpha King now, and Danielle would be his queen. Marlowe and I had already found their wedding gift: the North American Shifters and we, the Vampire Kingdom, had signed a mutual aid agreement.
Musketeer remained in Washington State as Marlowe’s steward, governing the entire North American vampire clan. Lucian was no longer an obstacle since we’d killed him and crippled his army. Snow White was Musketeer’s second-in-command. He understood North American supernatural communities better than his other European peers, and he liked that continent.
Smooth, Bangs, and Freckles had taken over the Mage Town and were doing a fabulous job rooting out the black magic within their region. I planned to visit them in three months.
The shifters, mages, vampires, and even Fae had formed the Council of North America Supernatural Alliance to prevent war between them and deal with the conflict between different species.
I was grateful that my friends didn’t even blink an eye after finally knowing what I was. So I hesitated to go for the last frosted cupcake. I should probably just let the princess have it.
“Take it, Pip,” Danielle laughed.
“If you insist,” I said, grinning at her and biting into the cake.
Just then, Sam pushed in a fancy trolley with a variety of ice creams and more snacks on every layer. My little sister was so good to me.
“Don’t worry, Pip,” she said. “There’s enough for everyone. And I want to say hi to your friends.”
My human family had moved to the Swiss Confederation with me. They loved it here, saying this was the richest and most beautiful land on Earth. They also appreciated the country’s excellent health insurance that was free or low cost to the citizens.
