His mother studied him for a moment before nodding her approval. "If you prove yourself capable, I shall allow you to bring her into our world."

Ryuji's heart swelled with relief and determination.

Despite his mother's initial disapproval, he was confident that he could prove himself worthy of Lily. Together, they would navigate the complex traditions and customs of his family.

As Lily listened to the exchange between Ryuji and his mother, she felt a mixture of fear and excitement. Fear of the unknown, and excitement for the challenges ahead. Ryuji had promised to guide her, teaching her the customs and helping her understand their significance. He had made it clear that he expected complete loyalty and submission from her. She knew this journey would be fraught with challenges, and she wondered if she was truly ready for it.

The next few days was a whirlwind of new experiences.

Lily learned how to make Japanese style meals while continuing to review her knowledge in the language. She attended a traditional tea ceremony and visited more local shrines and historical sites with Ryuji by her side.

On the fifth day, she and Ryuji went to a Kabuki theater performance and finished their day with one of Lily’s favorite activities - shopping.

“Are you sure it’s ok if I wear a kimono?” She asked Ryuji as they made their way through the narrow streets lined with family-owned shops.

“Of course,” Ryuji said. “I know that you’re going to look beautiful as always.”

Ryuji led her to a small store specializing in authentic Japanese attire. As they browsed through the racks, Lily marveled at the beautiful kimonos and obis. The delicate fabrics and intricate designs caught her eye, making her feel more than a little self-conscious about her own outfit.

Ryuji noticed her unease and offered reassurance. "Don't worry, Lily. We'll find something perfect for you," Ryuji reassured her, selecting a few pieces for her to try on with the help of a saleswoman.

As she slipped into the traditional garments, Lily felt an overwhelming sense of excitement mixed with anxiety. This new world was both alluring and intimidating.

The sales woman helped her with the many layers of clothing and carefully fastened the intricate obi around her waist, tying it securely. She adjusted the folds of the silk kimono, ensuring it draped gracefully over her frame. It was made of bright spring-time colors and had painted patterns of cherry blossoms.

Ryuji took a step back, as Lily came out of the changing area, admiring the transformation.

Lily stood there, feeling both proud and anxious, unsure of what to expect next.

“You look amazing,” He said.

Lily looked down, inspecting the wide patterned sleeves. “I hope your mother likes it.”

“Doesn’t matter because she’s not the one marrying you,” He chuckled and then sucked in a breath. He never spoke sarcastically of his mother. He cleared his throat and motioned to the sales woman.

“Please outfit her with several more kimono and yukata. She will need tabi socks as well.” He said, handing her a massive wad of cash.

The saleswoman nodded eagerly.

“Wait, they’re so expensive!” Lily tried to protest, but she was ushered to the back room by the sales lady and wasn’t allowed to leave until she had selected five more outfits.

The sales woman carefully folded and packaged each kimono and yukata with beautiful precision.

Ryuji’s driver met them at the store and packed the many boxes into the limo before they made their way home.

Lily looked down at the lavender and yellow kimono that she had chosen to wear out, as a surprise for Kaede.

“Don’t be nervous,” Ryuji said as they drove home. He reached over to her and pulled her close. “Believe me, if you didn’t need to look presentable for my other, I’d claim you right here and now.”

Lily shivered as he trailed kisses across her neck. It was impossible to feel anything other than desire when she was near him. She clutched his hand tightly, feeling the familiar comfort and warmth emanating from his touch. Butterflies fluttered wildly in her stomach, leaving her heart pounding. She hoped that she would be able to prove herself worthy of belonging to him.

TWELVE

They finally arrived at the entrance of Ryuji's family home where his mother was waiting.

She scrutinized Lily from head to toe, taking in every detail of her appearance. The silence between them felt heavy, and Lily could hardly bear the weight of her mother-in-law's disapproving gaze. Ryuji, however, appeared unfazed, standing tall and confident beside her.
