His hands stroked over her, teasing and arousing, and soon he had her on her back, his hard length filling her. “Kiss me as if this were our last day, Destiny.”
Her heart pinched. It very well may be.
Her fingers raked through his hair and she pulled his mouth to hers, releasing her pent-up passion until the poignant sting of her intense emotions scared her. He thrust deep into her sex and she hooked her legs over him, scraping her nails down his chest and staring into his eyes.
His hand rode up her front, loosely cupping her jaw. “You make me hunger for things I cannot have.”
“Can’t we just pretend for a night that you can have whatever you want?” He groaned and pressed his face into the crook of her shoulder.
“Such a sweet temptation.” His lips teased at her jawline, close to her ear and he tenderly nipped at her soft skin with his teeth. “If I had my way, I’d devour you.”
“Have your way. I’m not saying no.”
He groaned and dropped his head to her shoulder. “No matter how many times I have you, I’m always starved for more.”
He thrust hard, pinning her beneath him and showing her how much he didn’t want to let her go. She didn’t know men could be so passionate or how any future lover would ever measure up. “I think you’ve ruined me.”
He growled. “I wouldn’t dare.”
His mouth lowered to her breasts as he cupped and pulled at her sensitive flesh. Sometimes he’d bite her nipples, but then soothe the sting away with a soft kiss.
“I want you.”
She lifted as he gripped her ass and surged forward, his pelvis pressing to hers. She gasped at the incredible sense of fullness. “You have me.”
“I don’t. Soon you’ll be gone and this will be another lost memory.”
She frowned. “It doesn’t have to be. We could still see each other. I don’t mind coming here.”
“Shh.” He kissed her. “Let’s not worry about such things until we absolutely must. For tonight, let’s hide from time. We can face tomorrow’s cruel reality in the morning.”
His touch varied from greedy to gentle as if using his body to say goodbye. Grasping the finality and understanding that this might be their last chance to be together, she had the urge to cry.
She poured everything she felt for him into their kisses. They moved together as if they were one and found a rhythm as natural as the tides. His body pushed into hers like the ocean waves glide into the sand, stroking and reshaping her with every press of his hips, lick of his tongue, and caress of his hands.
Why had she allowed herself to get so attached? There could be no future for them. The thought of Cain settling down with some innocent Amish girl created a crushing pain in her chest that threatened to escape in a sob.
Who was she to interfere with his life? It was unrealistic to ask an Amish man to give up everything he knew, his family, his home, for a woman he’d just met. Yes, they shared incredible chemistry and off-the-charts passion, but they were too different. And so what if he was one of the most loyal men she’d ever met? His loyalty was to his family and loved ones, not her.
When an Amish person left their order, they left permanently in exile. She couldn’t ask that of him. Wouldn’t ask that of him. But some foolish part of her wished he’d offer it all the same. And for that, she was a fool.
CHAPTER 28
Cain slipped out of the house at dawn to feed. On his way back, he passed Dane sitting on his grandparents’ porch reading a book with a bright red cover.
“What do you have there?”
Dane startled and closed the book, quickly stuffing it under his leg. “Nothing.”
“Nothing?” Cain approached the porch. “You don’t hide nothing.”
Dane sighed and removed the book. “It’s a journal. I found it in a box with some of my mom’s stuff.”
“So you decided to read it? Isn’t a journal private?”
“She’s dead, Cain. Does it matter?”
He sensed the polite response would be to say something comforting, but Dane didn’t need coddling. He needed answers none of them had permission to give. “Did you find anything interesting?”
