“Is she alone?”
“Yes.” She flipped the dough onto a floured surface, paying him little mind.
He sighed with relief. “Thank God.” He rushed down the hall to his bedroom only to hear Gracie call after him.
“The bishop knows you brought another mortal here.”
Cain winced. He’d deal with Eleazar later.
The moment he entered his room, Larissa looked up and smiled. “You’re back.”
“For a bit.”
“Are you healed?”
“I’m mending. I’ll be fully recovered by morning.” He had a chance to feed from the animals, knowing it wasn’t safe to take any more from Destiny. Once the blood worked through his system, he should be back to normal.
“And Annalise…”
“Anna will be fine.”
“Gracie said you went to see her.” Unspoken worries showed in her perceptive eyes, but his sister had always been too polite to come out and ask tough personal questions. “And Adam?”
“Your manners are killing me, Larissa. Just say what you want to say.”
Her lips twitched. “There was so much blood, Cain.”
“You were there?”
“Afterward. When she calmed. Every time she fed, she vomited. Adam couldn’t sustain her. Gracie even fed her, but I could not.” Her hand curved softly over the front of her gown and Cain rushed forward.
“Are you…?”
“It’s early, but yes.”
“And mother?”
Larissa smiled, a breathy laugh crossing her lips. “Mother, too. Father is beside himself with joy. It’s a miracle.”
“You’ve spoken to him?”
“He sends letters. They’re enjoying their time away together.”
Hesitantly, he took another step closer and placed his hand over hers. His heart swelled with joy for his sweet sister. Although he had never been too fond of the old bishop, Eleazar treated Larissa well and cared for her greatly. That was more than her first husband had done.
“I’m happy for you, sister.”
“Thank you.”
They let the emotion-laden moment play a while longer until Cain stepped back. “The bishop knows I’m here?”
“We don’t keep secrets from each other, Cain.”
“You kept secrets from Silus.”
“Eleazar is my mate. There’s no comparison.”
Between Eleazar and Silus? There certainly wasn’t.
