Beckett glanced up. “Oh, that’s what I was doing last night. Apparently, while you and Eli were making up, Raj and I were planning how we could get the two of you to get over yourselves. Guess that was all for nothing.”
Jack tilted his head to the side, seeming lost in thought for a moment. “Hm. Well, that’s interesting, considering he wasn’t really courting her.”
Beckett’s thoughts slammed to a halt. “What?”
Had he stepped into a twilight zone?
“Eli told me that Raj was—well, she was letting him court her to make me jealous,” Jack said, running a hand through his hair, the sun slicing rays of light through the blinds and onto his ink.
“I cannot wrap my head around this,” Beckett said. “Surely he would’ve mentioned that while he was…”
“I think his loyalty lies with Eli, babe,” Jack drawled.
“Okay, yes. You have a point,” Beckett conceded.
“It’s all happening really fast, it feels like,” Jack mused, stroking a thumb over his face.
Beckett swallowed.
“Like, really fucking fast,” Jack said again, voice a little airy. “And that’s why I’m glad you’re here with me,” he added.
Beckett’s heart stopped in his chest.
“You know, on our first date, I called Eli in the bathroom,” he informed Beckett, voice light.
Beckett pulled back, surprise filling him. “You did? Why?”
“Because I was having a full-on crisis.”
That didn’t sound good. “Was it something I said?”
Jack wrinkled his nose. “Kind of.”
Beckett’s chest went tight. “What did I say?”
“You were asking about Eli. Trying to find out who she was to me.”
“Well, yes,” Beckett said. “I mean, I feel like it’s not often that omegas and alphas spend half their life with each other platonically.”
“Exactly,” Jack said, and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips.
Beckett was still confused, and let it show in his expression.
“You cared,” Jack said, vehement. “I’m not used to dating guys who do that. So I was kinda out of my depth.”
The tightness in Beckett’s chest eased and he breathed a little smoother. “Oh, I see.”
“Yeah. So I called her, freaking out. She told me to suck it up and woo the pants off this alpha.”
Beckett chuckled at that, cheeks heating. It had been pretty easy for Jack to woo the pants off him.
“I was scared,” Jack admitted. “Because I think I knew just how special you were going to be.”
Beckett melted. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Jack agreed, nodding, lips twitching into a smirk. “Who else would help me stalk my roommate to appease my own jealousy? And, apparently, come up with some devious plan to get us together? I want to hear more about that.”
Beckett laughed, and he wasn’t afraid to admit it was a little wet. “Well, I want to hear more about this fake-courting situation from Eli,” Beckett said. It hadn’t seemed very fake when Raj was talking about her. “I mean, you saw the way he looked at her,” Beckett told Jack.
