Harmonia has affection in her eyes as she looks at Harlon. He winks at her, but for all the possessive nature in me I can’t find an ounce of jealousy. Just deep appreciation.
“Thank you, brother. I owe you my life.”
“The doctors had something to do with it too. I just beat on your chest hard enough to make sure you didn’t leave this angel all alone.”
Harlon leans over me. Pain clouds his vision and has the skin of his forehead puckered with creases. “You don’t owe me anything. Because of you both HarmoniaandPolaris are alive.”
Harlon goes to step away, but I grip his hand. “Don’t wait. I couldn’t get to my Harmonia. But you have yours. Don’t wait. You feel me?”
Dark hair falls over Harlon’s forehead. Those storm clouds rolling across his expression turn darker. Santi and Cassius are at his side. “It’s not always a yes and no answer.”
“Try dying and see how clear it gets.”
“We hear you, brother.”
I release his hand. The three men fade into the distance. I expect them to have Polaris at their side, but I don’t see Nova’s sister anywhere.
Or Ares among the talking crowd of Savages, for that matter.
“Where’s the prez?”
Riot comes into my line of sight. He and the rest of the men have their cuts on. I thought for sure after we defeated the evil queen I’d want to take off with Harmonia, but seeing my brothers makes me want to stay. Riot tosses my skull and flames on the end of the hospital bed.
“You forgot something. Thought you would like this back.”
He takes my hand, and he comes in for a quick hug. “Glad to see you made it back, brother.”
“Me too, man.”
His hair looks like it’s streaked with gray. Which sounds about right, but it’s how the cold fluorescents hit the jet black that gives it the appearance of ash on obsidian.
Dragon lowers his weight on the edge of the bed.
“You okay?”
“It’ll take more than a couple of slugs to slow me down.” The dark circles under his eyes tell a different story but I read his silence for what it means. He doesn’t want to give Asena any more cause to worry.
“Next time everyone is going to put bullet-proof vests on before riding off like the calvary.”
Asena comes in, carrying her baby girl. “Wolfie, au you huwt?”
God, Little Dragon is freaking adorable in her pink tutu and matching glittery headband. Part of me hopes she never grows up. The world is ugly when you do. Dragon is smitten with her and takes the girl from her mother in his good arm.
“Wolfie, huh?” I’d laugh if it didn’t hurt so damn much.
Harmonia blushes a shade of scarlet I want to put on her cheeks in other ways.
A little hand pushes into mine. So much innocence. I can’t wait to have my version of a little dragon with Harmonia’s blue eyes and my black hair. “Nah, little lady, just resting.”
“Otay.”
“Come here, baby girl. Let’s giveWolfiesome space.” Dragon pushes off my bed and nails me with a teasing smirk. It feels good to be alive for once.
Baby. Girl.
“I wasn’t dreaming, right? I saw Ghost’s girl on the plane and a baby?”
“You’re right. They were there.” Fear flits across Harmonia’s expression. Dark shadows dull her sky-blue eyes a moment before my girl fights back and her light shines through again. The road ahead of us is going to be hard, but we will be okay. I know we will.
