My stomach heaves when her dead eyes lock onto me.
“You’re fucking insane. What did my father ever see in you?” I am truly baffled. He was kind where this woman is soulless.
“He saw dollar signs and wanted the power I promised him. Until he got soft.”
“Hello love, I see you were successful.”
A man with Ares’ eyes boards the plan and comes in to kiss my mother. My skin crawls.
“Silas, baby. Another few minutes and I would have left without you. Where is Veles? Did he take Genesis?”
Veles? Ares' other brother. Evil does really band together.
Through the window over her shoulder, I spot headlights racing toward us.
Wolfe? God, I hope so. My luck has to turn around at some point, right?
Silas signals for enforcers to join him outside the plane.
Mother points to Ghost’s little girl. “Her father was easy to manipulate into being a mole for me. A father’s love is such a great tool to use. One phone call and the Pakhan of the Russian Bratva was all too eager to supply me what I needed.”
“Ghost?”
She nods, arrogance pulling her shoulders into a tight line. My heart lurches into my throat. I’m out of my seat so fast with my hands around her throat she can’t do anything but fall to the floor under the brute force of my attack.
My heart races as I squeeze. “There’s no way I will let an innocent soul fall into your hands. I will kill you myself.”
I don’t feel the punch to my face or the roar of pure fury. Only the trickle of blood from my lip. I fall backward and then hands in my hair pull me to my feet. I wrap my hands around thick fists and suck in a breath. I land my elbow against his jaw and he stumbles back. I know what he is going to do before he decides.
An enforcer helping my mother up, loses track of my position. I grab his weapon and pull the trigger before the one with the heavy knuckles uses the children as shields. I put myself between them and anyone else. I check the magazine. Ten rounds versus what looks like an army of enforcers.
My odds are not good but I am not alone.
“You will never see the sun again. I will make sure of it.”
Jesus, please don’t make me have to kill my mother.
Determination raises my gun.
The roar of motors and guns going off my attention to what is going on outside the plane. I know better. Never take your eye off the enemy, but I see a mountain plow through enforcers like they are toy soldiers.
Wolfe. My heart sings. Ares is beside him and they are both going up against what looks like ten men. Maybe more. I can’t see too much through such a tiny window and it’s dark outside.
Bodies drop but I can’t make out faces. Are the Savages winning? If not, there’s no hope of making it off this plane alive.
Muzzle flashes fire off in the night, but beyond a certain point I can’t tell who is friend or foe.
My mother grabs a gun, points it at me.
If this is my end, so be it.
“I’m worthless to you dead.” Evil gleams in the depths of her eyes. A sick realization creeps over me. She will kill me, the children and Polaris without a second thought.
“You’ve served your purpose.”
She cocks the gun.
A dark shadow moves behind her. Wolfe is a blur of motion taking out the enforcers, but he’s not fast enough to eliminate the one with a gun pointed at his heaving chest.
